Alton Towers - where to stay?

Laura032004 · 30/08/2005 07:53

We're hoping to go to Alton Towers w/e of 25th September for my sister's 16th birthday.

We'll be taking a crowd of her friends too, so I'm looking for hotel recommendations in the area that are cheapish. Any ideas?

Thanks

We went in a tent about a mile away The Star Caravan Park, really good. 15 quid for 2 adults and 2 kids for the night. Pub nearby for food.

SueW · 30/08/2005 18:09

There are local B&Bs listed on the Alton Towers website

Laura032004 · 30/08/2005 18:55

OMG! Just put in for four adults (me, dh, my sister and at least one friend) and one infant (DS) for one night in Alton Towers Hotel with theme park package (tickets worth £88) and it was £570!!! I can't believe it. We could probably go to Disneyland Paris for that price! Do people really pay that? I was expecting £200 max! Am I just getting stingy in my old age!

There's a travel lodge nearby - Uttoxeter I think.

maddiemo · 30/08/2005 19:05

If there are a few of you going it might be worth booking a cottage for the weekend. Maybe try Cotttages4you or contact local tourist board.

I am horrified at how expensive the Alton Towers Hotels are. We went to Eurodisney instead this year and it did in fact work out cheaper.

Highly recommend this place /link{http://www.the-malthouse.com/\here} Stayed there a couple of years ag and they were really nice. Alton village has loads of B&Bs that are nice.

crunchie · 30/08/2005 19:10

oops malthouse

crunchie · 30/08/2005 19:11

Also see if you can get cheap park tickets on lastminute.com

Laura032004 · 30/08/2005 20:50

Thanks for all of those suggestions. Have emailed a few of the B+B's to ask about availability and prices. Lots in the £25pppn range, which isn't too bad. Travel lodge is £50 per room, so that's OK too really. Will work out to around £200 for one night stay and park tickets. Lots better than the Alton Towers resort!

Thinking about upgrading to the priority tickets. Anybody done this? What is the priority system like (never used it before).

Dont know about the priorty, but if you have little kids with you you can get a pass that means only 1 of you has to wait in the queue, the other person waits at the exit, and as you come off they go on throught the exit. Saved us HOURS. Also they give the kids wrist bands with your mobile on it at customer services. Just in case.

Laura032004 · 31/08/2005 09:11

Thanks for that tip charliecat - I remember something like that from last time we went, but as we didn't have DS at the time, we didn't pay much attention.

Now booked in at the Alverton Motel. Was quite difficult to find one with availability on the Saturday (for just the Saturday) which would let two 15 year olds have their own room (have I bitten off more than I can chew - wasn't anticipating any problems!)

NCT have discounted tickets for Alton Towers

£17.00 per Adult - £15.50 per Child (4-11 years)
Normal ticket price: £29.00 per adult and 21.00 per child.

These tickets can be used on any day of the season up to 31st October 2005 (excluding 28/29/30 October 2005) and as well as having a fun and thrill seeking day out with your family you will also be supporting the NCT!

The NCT will receive £3.50 per adult ticket and £2.00 per child ticket to help support parents and parents to be across the UK.

To book tickets call Beverley Wall on 0870 770 3236 ext 2325

kiwibelle · 31/08/2005 17:06

that sounds like a fab offer SueW - what is NCT?

SueW · 31/08/2005 17:26

National Childbirth Trust

They've had a deal with Chessington World of Adventures for 2-3 years as they have a regular large fundraising tea party. Both parks are part of the Tussauds group and a few weeks ago they announced this Alton Towers deal - which is great for those of us for whom a day in Chessington would mean an overnight stay or a very long day.

kiwibelle · 31/08/2005 17:53

cool... does NCT get any fundraising from selling these tickets?

kiwibelle · 31/08/2005 17:54

ah, duh... excuse my stupid post!!! I just re-read yours

SueW · 31/08/2005 17:55

It says in my previous post 3.50 per adult and 2 per child ticket

It's the best deal I know of other than group tickets.

SueW · 31/08/2005 17:56

oops = posts crossed!

kiwibelle · 31/08/2005 17:58

yes... it is a fab deal and a great opportunity for fundraising! I'm now wondering which weekend I can squeeze in a trip - my dd would love it.
