New York - is Chinatown ok to stay in?

I am going for a long girlie weekend in New York in November. In the process of trying to sort out accommodation, Chinatown seems much cheaper than other areas of the City. Has anyone else stayed in this area?

If so, what are your thoughts? We're two young (ish) females so I want to be somewhere that feels safe and wondering if it's so cheap because it's a bit rough.

I used to work on Broadway/Wall St and always got a car service home after 7pm as it was just too quiet on the subway.

I liked being within walking distance of Bergdorf's - I'd get my make up done there before going out for dinner! Very different life to the one I live now. Smile

We were in NY last month and stayed in the Hilton Doubletree on Lexington Ave/51st Street.

We were very happy with the hotel. The rooms were good, the service very good. Bar was very expensive but we didn't us it much anyway. Was next to a subway, and within walking distance of Central Park and other varius places we visited.

We stayed at the Hotel Chandler - just round the corner from the Empire State Building - it was lovely and just the ticket, very central and you could walk to quite a few places from it. Also very handy for getting up the Empire State first thing before there's many crowds - a lovely way to start the day! Have a lovely time :)
