Ideas for European holiday in Oct with two yo please

Well that's it really! We want to go on a week or so long holiday in Oct. Don't want to travel too far but would like decent-ish weather. Don't want to spend too much. Don't want to be in a nasty resort. Am basically thinking hire a car, hire a gite/villa/cottage and do fun stuff with the little one. We're happy walking/beaching/exploring but would be nice to have indoor options if the weather is rubbish.

We've done Mallorca and Northern France recently and in the past (pre-lo) Sardinia, Malta and, further afield, Jamaica, La Reunion and Cuba.

So any ideas please? Am thinking about Corsica... or mainland France... again...?

Thanks!

We have just booked to go to Antibes (just outside Nice) in late September. What appealed to me about it were:

  • easy flights (and cheap) with easyjet to Nice then minimal transfer time
  • lovely golden sand beaches
  • everything walkable (we don't bother with car hire)
  • old town to walk around and lovely port as well as the sandy beaches. Lovely daily under cover market to buy goodies

We are travelling with 3 children aged 9, 6 and 2. There is a train station in Antibes with train service into Nice, Monacco, Cannes, etc (all really short train rides). There is also a waterpark, sea world, play park type thing just outside Antibes.

Would also recommend Nice. Went there in late September and weather ideal. Also lots to do. Having said that if weather is not a priority I would strongly recommend Munich. It has so much to do for kids, I was staggered and very easy to get about. If you want more info just ask

just seen decentish weather. What about Greece?

We're going to Morocco at end of October. Ryanair do cheap flights from Manchester and there are some decent (reasonably priced) all-inclusive hotels. We are staying at the hotel Club Agador. Weather should still be good too.
If you want to see my general advice on booking similar cheap holidays try my blog at www.fatherof3boys.com

Thanks everyone. After finding some very cheap flights to Corsica I think we're settled on that (if we book it fast enough - if not I shall look at your suggestions again). So, if anyone has any advice/tips on Corsica that would be appreciated now! Ta

Was just about to post the same thing, when I saw your post, rockbudgie Smile

Have been told that Corsica might be too cold at the end of October (apparently it gets very windy), and that weather in Portugal, Spain and Greece should be better than France.

Has anyone been anywhere that they'd recommend in these countries?

rockbudgie · 19/08/2010 20:24

Oh really? I assumed Corsica would be nice in October... hmmm may have to reconsider. Thanks for letting me know though.

I've never been to Portugal or Greece (maybe now is the time). As for Spain - Mallorca is lovely but I far prefer the north which is less touristy and over developed. Around Pollensa is gorgeous although it's small enough to see everything if you have a car. Not sure you can rely on the weather though. September is always wet! October should be better but could be fairly cold.

Is Crete too far? We have just come back from a brilliant villa set up, 9 villas around 2 pools, near Chania which easy jet fly to (not sure whether that is just summer tho)

Crete is far south so warmer but what really made it is the owners were so friendly and hospitable it just made for a very sociable holiday. I cant link sorry but it is retreat village (as one word) dot com.

You do need a car but there is lots to see so it is worth it.

Crete is a great choice for October holidays.
