Travelling alone to New Zealand with 9 wk old - help......

Hello,

Any advice or tips much appreciated!

I am travelling Air New Zealand with our DS (9wks), to New Zealand.

I am planning on breast feeding (32 hr journey) but am hoping to bring expressed breast milk as well in case of feeding emergencies.....

I understand that I can bring expressed breast milk but am unsure if there are limits on the amount I can carry and it's 'transportation'. Would it be better to bring some frozen supplies and let them defrost on board? Has anyone done this before?

If anyone has made a similiar length journey and has any tips on feeding or simply survival, please let me know.

I'm starting to really worry, and that's before I discover if any of my pre-pregnancy winter clothes still fit!!

They will want you to taste the EBM so probably won't allow it on frozen but it should be fine in a coolbag

Is your baby here already?

Hi,

No He will be travelling with me - so am sure they'll realise he's mine. Thanks for the advice about defrosting the milk - I'll make sure I do this on Sunday morning.

I'm trying to speak to someone at Heathrow to try and get a confirmed answer so save problems.

Thanks again

We travelled to Oz with a almost 12 week old and it was a bit of an non-event actually. I got myself into a pickle about it but it was very easy.

If you are breastfeeding this will make it much easy. As youay have read, feed them on take-off and landing to prevent any ear problems (or dummy if you use one). You can buy disposable bottles that are sterilized if you are going to us expressed milk. Make sure that you don't have more than 100ml of breast milk in each receptical. I would use the bags that you can get from mothercare/boots. Be prepared for the customs to ask you to taste the breast milk! DD was FF and we were asked to open every carton, but when I politely argued that they would no longer be sterile that allowed me to open one.

Try to get the airport early to ensure a bulkhead seat and check if they have a bassinet. These are great the only thing is that when there is turbulence you have to take the out!

The drone of the airplane makes a baby sleep very well on planes. Definitely take them now, travelling to Oz when they were 20 months was hell!

Best tips I have had told to me are:

Drink loads of water. If you are breastfeeding you can get quite dehydrated.

Double up the nappies - much easier to change if they have done a big one.

Take a baby carrier with you.

oh and take your own bedding for the travel cots they give you.
