eden Camp In Yorkshire (World War 2)

We have just had a brilliant day here with our ds & dd aged 8 & 11. It is an ex WW2 prisoner of war camp and the exhibits are now all in the original huts. They have both recently done WW2 at school but neither are particulary interested in the topic. However they really enjoyed the day. Its mostly indoors so the weather is not a problem. It is also really reasonable £20 for the four of us entrance fee, £5 each for fantastic lunches and lots of lovely unusual stuff in the gift shop, again very reasonably proced. The whole place had a lovely family run feel to it and it made a lovely change to come away feeling glad to have spent our money in such a nice place rather than feeling a bit ripped off!

I second this - Eden Camp is a brilliant day out!

My DD went on a school trip there this year. She loved it.

Eden Camp is fab. Great as you say if it is a rainy day. The people that run it do seem to just love their job. Total enthusiasts and really good value.

None of the usual tat and plastic overpriced dumbed down nonsense that many museums seem to have descended to.

ptangyangkipperbang · 06/08/2010 21:23

Agree totally. My boys loved it.

Do you think it would be ok for 5 yr old girl and 8 yr old boy? I'm looking for somewhere to take my mum for a day out for her 70th birthday?

Grockle · 06/08/2010 23:56

I used to take 8, 9 , 10 yr olds. Your mum will love it. Not sure about a 5 yr old - I don't think there is anything too scary or graphic and there's a good playground.

I went last year with DD who was 8. I loved it, DD was terrified in a lot of the huts. The ones where its dark or there are tapes of air raid sirens/bombs falling or models of injured soldiers. She spent most of the day sobbing outside various huts while waiting for me to come out.

Thanks but I think they may be a bit young. I think Stripey by what you say my DS (8) is a little nervous and would freak out too

BeenBeta · 07/08/2010 08:41

Yes, it probably is better for a Yr 5/6 after they have done WWII in the national curriculum. I thought it was fascinating.

The sirens are loud and probably frightening for a small child but I cant remember any bad smels. It smells musty - like I imagine the 1940s did. Grin

FoJo · 07/08/2010 14:00

yes there are smells! You can even buy them in bottles! They are to kind of help re-create the experience (!) so there are smells of burning and kind of 'oily/petrol' type of smells, not too awful but not lovely either! I do think under 7/8s probably wouldnt like it

The York air museum, not far from Eden Camp is also very interesting.
