Disneyland Paris - toddler and hotel advice please

Lenni · 04/08/2010 21:55

Are thinking of taking DS (2) and DD (4) to Disneyland Paris in early Jan to catch the end of the Christmas celebrations. I know we are crazy to be thinking of taking a 2 year old to Disney at that time of year but DD starts school next year and I will be returning to work as a teacher so this is our last chance before we are confined to school holidays and high prices. We are all Christmas mad so it is as much for the twinkly lights etc. that we would go in Jan, but also it is DS's birthday. Is it going to be dreadful? Should I save the money and wait to take them to Florida when they are older?

If we do go I have seen a 2 night free offer on at the moment so could afford 4 nights in one of the nice Disney hotels. We could just about stretch to the Disneyland Hotel but it would be a stretch or could comfortably manage the Hotel New York and take more spending money. Swimming pool in the Disneyland Hotel is closed at the time of trip so am thinking of booking the Hotel New York in case weather is foul. Anyone with experience of both with any advice? The Hotel New York doesn't look all that great for little ones, would we be better in the Sequoia Lodge?

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Current Inventions prices-
Lunch adult ?35. child ?17
Dinner with Characters adult ?50 child ?25
Covered by Premium dining vouchers.
Not cheap, but certainly a special treat.

Lenni · 06/08/2010 20:48

Freddo - That's how I feel. I would far rather have the memories of seeing them amazed at 4yo and 2yo than wait until my DD is 6 or 7 and them both have memories but them not be quite so believing iyswim.

Figgygirl - we were going to go on 4th Jan so miss school holidays and still get 3 days of the Christmas celebrations. The 2 nights free offer starts then so I would pay about £5-600 for 4nights/5days in the Sequoia or Newport by time had added those room upgrades. Obviously that is without travel. It would be £1024.00 in the Disneyland Hotel. Do you think it is worth hanging on for any other offers or do you think this is as good as it'll get pricewise?

I'd love to find a food offer as know we need to budget loads for meals if we eat in the restaurants, am tempted to pay for the half board and have it all out the way but I'm not sure whether we'd get our money's worth unless ate in the top restaurants for the half board category. Do you usually do half board?

Figgygirl - Thank you for the birthday cake info. So I can book Cafe Mickey when I book the hotel package and then sort the cake out when I arrive. Excellent.

Maybe I will do the half board!

Character tea in Lucky Nugget is a bit of a rip of imo.

Cafe Mickey + cake = the one to do, worth every penny Wink

Would love to take my DS1 to toy story playland one day...

FreddoBaggyMac · 06/08/2010 20:58

We did the inventions restaurant character dinner too, food was amazing but I thought Cafe Mickey was better for the little ones... it had more of the crazy atmosphere that they love!

I would def recommend that you do half board Lenni, as you just don't want to be worrying about the cost of stuff when you're there! You can get by with no lunch, the breakfasts are so huge (and you can always smuggle a picnic lunch out in your napkin Wink)

Lenni · 06/08/2010 21:07

Thank you for all of your help, it is really appreciated. Will look into half board again, I'm getting so close to being done now on choosing everything. Still haven't settled on the hotel though! I'm thinking I could pack some snacks in the suitcase for lunch for the DCs, they don't eat that much for lunch anyway. They put it away at tea time instead! DH and I will be fine with a flask of coffee and a big breakfast. Plus I still have a stone and a half of baby weight to shift so 3 restaurant meals a day would not be good news!

If you book online, you can only book the HB category that goes with your hotel ( Premium, Plus or Standard) or upgrade to a higher one. If you book over the phone with Disney you can actually choose which HB you want. They tend to just assume that people will want to eat in their own hotel, which is not always the case.
Some may prefer to stay in a budget hotel, but eat in the fine dining or Character restaurants.
Some may want to stay in the Disneyland Hotel, but only pay for Standard HB.
You need to decide where you want to eat first, then see which category HB is best.HB only works effectively if you use the voucher to cover the whole cost of your meal, including one drink. You can use the voucher for lunch or dinner, but if you use it in a higher category restaurant, they will take it at Euro face value, so just like cash.
You will be charged the normal restaurant prices, and deduct the value of your vouchers from your total bill.
We have a really good breakfast, ( you will notice people taking croissants, ham, cheese etc, and filling bags to take into the parks for later), then we just have a small snack for lunch, like a muffin or similar. We use our HB vouchers for dinner later- either a buffet or 3 course meal.
So we don't actually spend much when we are there, only on souvenirs, and some ride photos. We take plastic bottles to fill at the drinking water fountains in both parks.Look out for food/ drink/ merchandise receipts that people leave behind or drop, as they may offer a free drink later in the day.People don't notice the small print on the receipt.
We don't do Character meals any longer usually as my sons are older, but we like the restaurants covered by HB Plus. The only Character restaurant in this category is Lucky Nugget Saloon lunchtime buffet, in Frontierland. We have done this, and it was fun. The food has a Tex Mex influence, but also rice, pasta, and other choices. All the restaurants have vegetarian options.
When we eat in Inventions next week, we will use our vouchers and pay the extra.I am going with my eldest son , who enjoys the fine dining now, so I have booked Walt's, Blue Lagoon, and Silver Spur as well.
I book our trips as a package, either flying or Eurostar, so I phone Disney for the quotes. This time, flying was cheaper.
Booking is always a bit of a gamble, as no one knows what Disney are going to do- not even the staff.
However, as other posters have mentioned, if you book with Disney then a better offer comes out, I have been told that people have cancelled, then rebooked, with no penalties.
It would be worth phoning Disney to ask about this.
08448 008 111
Press 1 to speak to a Disney operator, and you can ask them, and get quotes as well.
Freddo, I didn't realise that they could book 6 into one room in the DLH. Thanks for the info.
I forgot to mention that Admirals Floor guests, New York guests, and DLH guests get a free tea in the hotel at 5pm.We have never had this, as we are always in the parks until closing.Good reports of it though.
By the way, the hotels have got the most fabulous suites as well.......
If you are in a suite, Castle Club room ( DLH) or Empire State room (HNY) you also get a VIP Fastpass. This gives you instant access to all rides with a Fastpass facility for the whole of your stay.
All guests of the DLH are given one instant Fastpass ticket each.

Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 21:40

Freddo is right in saying that Cafe Mickey is probably the most fun. The food reviews are not that brilliant, but most people say that their children had a fantastic time there, which made it worth it.
As far as I am aware, the meal is 3 courses, with choices of starter and main, and the desserts are buffet.
The restaurant is by the lake, at one end of the Disney Village.
You can also have Character breakfast and lunch there. ( Hotel New York guests can choose to pay a small supplement and have breakfast here).Booking is advised.
It used to be called the Los Angeles Bar and Grill, and I have lots of photos and video of my sons dancing with Characters there when we did Character breakfasts.
You can buy Disney autograph books online, or buy DLP ones in resort.
The Characters have different names though, as in French!

Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 21:43

Meant to give you this link for a map of the Disney Village. You can see Cafe Mickey on the left by the lake, and also the location of the Hotel New York.

FreddoBaggyMac · 06/08/2010 21:45

Figgy - wish you'd been around last year when I put my posting on here about advice on going to Disneyland Paris Smile

Lenni, I'd also recommend dinner with the princesses for your 4 year old DD (that is also a premium meal I think) - all of the princesses and princes wander about and chat to all of the children (it seems less crowded than the other meals) and the food on its own is worth taking photos of, eg. one of the courses is arranged in the shape of Cinderella's slipper!

If you can afford the disney hotel with half board i'd go for that (even if it's really stretching you). If going for the disney hotel means you have to do without half board I would go for a less expensive one with the half board.

IMO you are better off going without lunch as the burger-type restaurants are a bit of a let down, we only used them because we had vouchers.

FreddoBaggyMac · 06/08/2010 21:51

Figgy - we had a family room at the Disneyland Hotel and one of us was a baby so we were classed as 5+ cot, not sure if they'd have let us in as a full 6! Our only other option (out of the walking-distance hotels) was one of the premium rooms at the Newport which didn't work out very much cheaper, so that's why we went the whole hog and chose the Disneyland Hotel... I so do not regret it though, just the smell of it when you walk in is so amazing Smile

Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 21:57

Freddo, I didn't even know that forums existed last year!
Bit of a late starter where computers are concerned.....
LOL.
The restaurant you mean is Auberge De Cendrillon in Fantasyland. It certainly is a treat for little girls ( and big girls) who like the Disney Princes and Princesses. The mice from Cinderella are also there, and the price includes a set of photos with the Characters, ( but no longer if using Premium vouchers I understand).
Cinderella's Slipper is an ice cream dessert.
The food is very fine dining, and kids don't often eat much,( judging by reviews) but TBH who cares if they are happy?
Cinderella's Pumpkin Coach is in the restaurant courtyard.
Try to get a table by the fireplace, as that is where the Princes and Princesses dance.
Not sure how up to date this menu is, but it will give you an idea of what to expect. Also look at photos and reviews on Trip Advisor.

Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 21:58

Ahhh, the smell......
I forgot about that.
Everyone mentions that smell.....

Lenni · 06/08/2010 22:02

You two are slowly talking me into spending a frigtening amount of money! All for good reason of course! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I think I'm going to go for the Disneyland Hotel (Argh!) and book the half board. The half board would then cover Cafe Mickey for DS's birthday, the Princesses meal for DD, a dinner in Inventions in the hotel and one other meal. If I do a cheap party for them both for their birthdays and only buy stocking fillers for Christmas and a small gift for birthdays (and nothing for DH ) then I reckon I would save enough on that to cover the difference between the Sequoia and the Disneyland.

I did look at the Castle Club etc. (while DH wasn't looking Grin) and almost fainted at the prices. They aren't included in the free nights offer so more than double the cost! I'm hoping the queues won't be too bad in early Jan and TBH I don't think we'll be dragging the DCs from ride to ride anyway, DD will be too busy staring at the lights on the castle! And then there is the Christmas market to investigate and ice skating, and...! And I haven't even looked at the rides yet, argh, more planning.

OP posts:
Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 22:52

The ' ice skating' is in front of the Hotel New York, but no longer real ice. It is now an artificial surface, for year round use.
At least you don't get a wet butt when you fall over!
Yes, Premium HB will cover all those, and anywhere else you fancy trying.
Also Buffalo Bill WW Show, but your children are a bit too young for that maybe.

Figgygirl · 06/08/2010 23:22

I got 40% off my booking at the New York for next week but summer holiday prices are so high, that it is still very expensive.I originally booked the Santa Fe to save some money, but then decided to upgrade to the New York, as the budget hotels do not have air con in the rooms, and I thought it might be hot.It cost an extra £320.
With HB Plus, and BBWWS added on ( my son wants to see that again)I have paid about £1800 for 2 adults for 4nts/ 5 days, including flights.
We will go into Paris for one day, and do some sightseeing.

FreddoBaggyMac · 07/08/2010 07:33

Lenni you are doing the right thing Smile I was in your position when we were booking last year and I know it is SO much money, but I can honestly say DH or me didn't regret it once. I've stayed in lots of hotels over the years and The Disneyland hotel is my all-time favourite, it certainly has the most atmosphere. You'll see what I mean by the smell as soon as you walk in! When we first arrived we were confused as to where is actually was as it seems like part of the park. I know a few other people who've stayed there and they all having nothing but good things to say about it. If you're spending a vast amount anyway you may as well add a little bit extra and go for the best imo.

We went at the end of March and the queues did not bother us at all, there's a great atmosphere with European students singing rounds of Disney songs while they're standing waiting (that entertained my children more than some of the rides actually...)Under 5's love the 'It's a small world' ride which we went on a few times and never had to queue for more than 5 mins.

the other 'premium' restaurant we went to was Walts, which was lovely but not particularly geared towards little ones - you'd be better off going for a second meal at Cafe Mickey imo Wink

You've got me all excited... I was lying in bed last night wondering how we can scrape the money together to go again!!

Lenni · 07/08/2010 13:10

Booked it! Thank you so much for all the tips. Have booked cake too and will book Cafe Mickey once get parade times etc. So much to think about! They asked for his birthday date and age so could pass info on to the hotel, very efficient.

So excited now, wish it was tomorrow - except I haven't got enough warm clothes for the DCs yet, so maybe next week!

Haven't booked transportation yet. Disney flights were £400 with transfers so going to hang on for the eurostar to be released and see if that is cheaper as wouldn't have to pay for DS.

Freddo - We have DH's birthday and DD's birthday both in December, plus our 10 year anniversary and Christmas obviously so I'm going to make this everyone's present for everything. I'll get a few cheap bits to open on the day for Christmas but they are too young to be materialistic, felt pens and the like will be enough for DD. Go for it if you can, sounds like it was a brilliant trip for you all.

Re transfers- if you book a package including flights with Disney, they give you vouchers for the VEA bus transfer to / from resort. This is fine, but you have to get to terminal 2 E/F to catch the Disney bus. It takes about 45 mins to resort.
On your return you need to catch a bus from your hotel about 3 hrs before your filght time, to allow for journey and check in time. ( CDG airport).
Although I have got the VEA bus included, I have booked a private transfer when we arrive, as I just like to get there ASAP, and not hang around for a bus.
We recommend two companies on our Trip Advisor MLV forum- ezyshuttle and isprestige. They have good reviews from many DLP visitors.John from ezyshuttle charges ?70 each way. isprestige are slightly cheaper, ?60 each way.I know that isprestige have DVD's in their vehicles to keep kids entertained on the journey ( not sure about ezyshuttle).
You can book them one way or both. We are going to use the VEA bus to return though.
Another option is to use the fast TGV train from CDG to DLP. It only takes 10 mins, but you have to book seats on a particular train.
The Eurostar is very easy, and if you ask for Express Checkin, they give you your park tickets on the train, and take your luggage to your hotel, so you can go straight into the parks on arrival. ( Direct train arrives 1.30pm and leaves around 7.50pm)

Figgygirl · 07/08/2010 14:47

By the way, Walt's, Blue Lagoon and Silver Spur are covered by Plus vouchers. They give you 3 choices of starters, mains and desserts.
If you have Premium vouchers, you can choose from the main restaurant menu in all the restaurants.

Figgygirl · 07/08/2010 14:49

Freddo, I book it, then worry about paying for it!
Just managed to scrape enough spending money together for next week.

FreddoBaggyMac · 07/08/2010 18:17

Glad to hear you're all booked up Lenni!
Another tip while I remember, buy your DD a princess dress from asda or somewhere similar (perhaps for her birthday/ Christmas) and take it with you as the little girls wear them everywhere (obviously under coats when you're going) - she'll def want to wear it for dinner with the princesses, and the ones you can buy in the park are too expensive given that it is likely to be ripped and have food all over it by the end of your stay!

We've moved house since our last trip and are seriously counting pennies so it will be a few years before we can afford to go back I think - but I am happy with my memories for now Smile

Lenni · 07/08/2010 20:14

Thank you - will look out for one. Any other tips most welcome Grin

Hi Lenni, hope you enjoy the DL hotel - I think you made a great choice, it truly is magical.

If you're doing professional photos with the characters in the morning outside the restaurant, remember that they keep them for 2 days in the shop and the unit cost reduces, the more you buy. So you could do a few characters over a 2 day period and collect them all together. Each character does half hour each. They put up a timetable each morning so you know exactly what time each character will be there. Obviously you don't have to buy professional pics and can take your own. The photographer will wait for you to take your own before s/he does the prof ones.

Agree with FreddyBaggyMac about Princess dress. Buy before you go. We did lunch at Auberge at Easter and I was really sorry I hadn't bought a dress for my DD but couldn't justify forking out 60+ euro in the park for one. As Figgygirl says, try get a table near the fireplace at Auberge. And make sure to make your restaurant bookings early.

And check out hotel newsletter in the lobby each morning - it gives the times when the characters will be in the hotel. They do a dance routine most days down the main staircase and then dance with the kids round the lobby. It's great! And sometimes, they spend time in the playroom. You'll find details in the newsletter.

Finally, transfers to Disney. On our first trip, we took the VEA shuttle. Nightmare. Had to take a bus to another terminal and then queue (I use the term loosely!) with hundreds of people. No system, just pushing and shoving. It felt like hours until we reached the hotel.

Last time, we took a transfer with Inter Shuttle Prestige. Fantastic. Bus would have cost me 30 euro each way for DD and I, transfer cost 60 euro. Worth every penny. Driver met us, we walked 10 metres to the door and the car was outside. Offered my DD a choice of DVDs to watch on the journey. We were checking into hotel less than 1 1/2 hours after landing. Completely stress free.

Have a great trip.

Figgygirl · 22/08/2010 21:21

The ordinary Princess dresses in DLP ( Snow White, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty) are ? 45. They also sell more expensive fancier ones for ? 70.
