Mousses, Lefkas - Questions... questions...

Wheelybug · 02/08/2010 20:42

Off to mousses this weekend (so it'd better be as good as MN has led me to believe)... and a couple of question spring to mind that I hope some people might be able to help with -

  1. HOw far away is the nearest cash point ?
  1. Does the resort provide beach towels ?

Hmmm, am sure there were others... but can't think now so will probably plague anyone kind enough to answer until the weekend !

TIA

Oh I know

  1. If I was mad enough to consider getting up early a couple of days and running, is this madness (note - a generic answer not required I know this is madness on a summer holiday, but more like - are there places to run to/around etc).

no idea re cash
no way re beach towels - or at least not when we went
ebaches either too hot or crap ime

AlaskaNebraska · 03/08/2010 10:31

it is VERY VERY Hot there - no way to run
and yes you can

Wheelybug · 03/08/2010 10:33

Oh I have just done a search and some poeple were saying they did provide beach towels. Maybe they used to...

So the beaches aren't any good ? That's a shame....

Maybe will leave the trainers at home and promise myself I will swim properly every day (which I won't).

the beach we went to was SO SO hot - and not near enough to hop to
thepirate ship trip is WAY better than you think it will be

Wheelybug · 04/08/2010 07:32

Thanks for the info - will bear that in mind. Any other tips ?

Yes they do provide towels - or did last yr. Perhaps they say not to take them to the beach - but we did. We love the beaches, yes they are pebbly but loads of covey bits at Agios Nikitas, fantastic waves and gorgeous water at Kalamitsi. Heard great things about the pirate trip but DS2 was a little too young last yr. DH went running as he was marathon training. Plenty of places to go but it will be BAKING in Aug. It was almost 40 deg in May last yr.
Cash point: there's lefkas town or one of the supermarkets, the nae of which escapes me, so that's no help. Think Milos beach bar may do cash... but that would be the only place within walking distance.
We love it there - hope you have a wonderful time!

Wheelybug · 05/08/2010 16:34

Thanks Helenabeth.

That;s good news on the towels and beaches and cashpoints (doens't need to be walking distance but I don't want to take oodles of cash so that's fine) - although I did splash out on new beach towels for dh and I yesterday. That's a whole £6 I've now wasted .

At the moment the temp at preveza (the nearest I can get on bbc) is only 29/30 ish. I too was expecting it much hotter although 29/30 would be perfect. Anyway, the villas are airconditioned arent' they ?

Have decided to bung running kit in just in case although suspect I won't do much.

Any other tips Helen ? How old are your children ? Mine are 5.5 and 17 months (think Alaska's are older).

Another question actually - is there a washing service and if so, is it any good (we went to Periyali a couple of years ago and everything white went yellow due to the water) ? Am wondering quite how many clothes I need to take for messy dd2 !!

Did you use the creche/holiday club ?

OP posts:
AlaskaNebraska · 05/08/2010 17:13

yes milos beach bar was ok
we went in aug so too hot to be on a beach all day
was the year of big forest fires so was REALLY hot

big prob with mossies as that year they had ptu the repellent down locally adn then it had rained ( or somethign) so it hadnt taken..

Wheelybug · 05/08/2010 17:15

That's the year we were in Periyali (the fire year) but we went end of Aug/beginning of Sept so we had 1 week where it was 35 ish and then a week where it was 25 ish. V strange.

Yes they provide beach towels.

Cash machine in the museum on the lagoon road as you approach Lefkas - that was the nearest I think. We usually parked there and walked in from there, as parking near the marina could be crazy. You really will need cash as nowhere takes cards and in particular you will need to pay your bar bill by cash. We usually just use cards on holidays so we got well and truly caught out, especially as we hadn't prepaid for the kids club.

There is a gym with a treadmill so worth packing the trainers I think.

Other tips? The odyseus boat trip is worth doing. Also worth taking out a boat yourself for the day (or better still doing this with another family).

The beds have a peculiar base which will cause you to bang your shins, so worth blocking these with cases etc. The washing service is not guaranteed. One year the crèche did it, then the next they couldn't as the washing machine kept breaking down. But the lady behind the bar (Rena) is worth talking to as she did my washing, and she also babysits.

AlaskaNebraska · 05/08/2010 19:22

a gym eh?

AlaskaNebraska · 05/08/2010 19:23

yy to boat hire
yy to shin

Wheelybug · 05/08/2010 20:02

Ooh thanks Ladymuck - good ish news about gym (although no excuse then). Will pack trainers rather than beach towels.

Won't bank on washing then !

Am intrigued by bedbases ! Will pack shin pads.

Those blinking beds. don't get too excited about gym. Haven't been in it ( shudders at thought) but it resembles a nissan hut type thing. air con in villas yes, make sure you angle it upstairs1
my two were 3.8 and 9mths first time we went, then 4.7 and 22 mths. we did try the kids' club and they both really enjoyed it, much to my surprise. they just did 4 mornings over the course of 2 weeks, which was a good balance for us. Lovely lady at bar. didn't ask about babysitting as never felt the need, but I remeber reading on here that others have. i just handwashed stuff in the sink and stuck it out to dry on the racks provided. worked fine for us, even with messy toddlers. you'll find a book in your villa with all sorts of handy hints that people contribute. we loved having the car and pootling off into the mountains/exploring beaches. Karyia nice (cheap lunches!) you can be as sociable as you like (dh v happy at bar till small hours, me happiest with book on patio) without feeling obliged to join in. the weekly bbq's are pricey but lovely. missing it this yr due to 6mth old, but really hoping to go back again next yr.

Wheelybug · 06/08/2010 07:33

Thanks for all the info everyone. Am beginning to get excited (although all the packing is looking over me a bit !!).

Have realised by reading MN that, as we are in villa 1, we won't be able to use babymonitors and at the bar/ restaurant. Should have read that bit first. Oh well, we'll be as happy witha bottle of wine on the patio. We intend to do early dinners out with the children if it works (we've always done this with dd1 who then sleeps in, in the morning but dd2 is a very different kettle of fish).

OP posts:
Ladymuck · 06/08/2010 08:25

It still isn't too far to the bar from House 1. no idea as to whether too far for monitor though. But you can certainly wonder back and forth easily enough. A popular sitting option has been to get to know your neighbour (you share the patio) and that way you can share the babysitting.

The cost of eating out in Greece had gone through the roof, and I did find the menus a bit samey, so you may wish to be prepared to cook a couple of nights for yourself. You can borrow a barbecue.

Wheelybug · 06/08/2010 17:56

Oh thanks LM - DH has been asking if there's a bbq to cook stuff. We will certainly do this some nights.

Have to start packing this evening - beginning to get excited !!

Thanks for everyone's info.

OP posts:
AlaskaNebraska · 06/08/2010 17:57

god just let your kids stay up and tootle around

Wheelybug · 06/08/2010 18:14

That's definitely plan A Alaska, and what we have done in the past with dd1, but dd2 is a bit of a bolter and not entirely sensible being only 17 months so depending on how enclosed things are it may not be so relaxing !

OP posts:
Beattiebow · 06/08/2010 18:18

the pool is a bit stressful with a toddler iirc in the evenings. We stayed up with ours in the evening, but had to keep a very close eye on dd3.

I thought that you could go running along the beach that is very close to the resort. I can't remember very much as we were there 3 years ago, but it is quite close I think.
