Fresh milk while flying

MrsDoolittle · 24/08/2005 11:43

Everyone keeps telling us what a nightmare it is flying through the States at the moment.
All I want to know is will it be alright to fill an previously used pop bottle for some fresh milk for dd on the plane?

Thank you so much

don't see why not.
although, they will probably have milk on the plane if you asked nicely for some!

MrsDoolittle · 24/08/2005 11:45

starlover Thanks. But it will be UHT

I imagine it will be fine, as long as it isin a plastic bottle. I think you can have trouble with glass.

I never have problem getting milk on board though.

Happy travelling!

How old is dd? Will she need fresh milk on the plane?

MrsDoolittle · 24/08/2005 11:58

Maybe not? She is 16 months.
I can't stand tha taste of UHT so I guess that I'm thinking if I don't like it neither will she.

My ds (17 months) has UHT milk when we're travelling and is fine with it. Personally I hate the stuff but he doesn't seem to mind it at all. Maybe you could try her with some at home before you go?

Fennel · 24/08/2005 12:30

fresh milk goes off really quickly on planes. Isuggest taking both UHT cartons and just water. she'll be ok with one of those for a few hours.

MrsDoolittle · 24/08/2005 12:42

Supposing it I put it in a stainless stell flask.

Although, dm said they won't let me through costums with it.

Will she really drink UHT?

Urgh

Hi Mrs D,

A stainless steel flask should be fine, don't take any notice of the DM!. What about using a cool jug?..

The aircrew should have some milk for your daughter but they will give you this in a cup or some such container. They won't fill up the bottle for you.

Have never come across UHT milk on a US based airline (thank god!!). I ask for milk and have always gotten fresh milk rather than UHT.

MeerkatsUnite · 24/08/2005 13:33

What's your route?. I seem to recall it but don't want to get it wrong!.

ninah · 24/08/2005 13:58

why not use aptamil

ninah · 24/08/2005 13:58

seriously ds drinks UHT even tho it's vile we swear by it on hols

jenkel · 24/08/2005 14:20

I would take milk in a sealed bottle, if they got funny with you, you could prove that it is still sealed and I would guess they would be happier to let you on. We flew to Australia with a 7 month old and took 3 1 pint plastic containers of milk, we had to bin them all at customs. The cabin staff put them in the fridge for me, I just put each one in a plastic bag and wrote our name on the bottle.

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 14:27

I was thinking about this for my 16 month old Mrs D.

I was going to take a small cool bag (with ice packs in)as hand luggage on the plane and include some fresh (not UHT) milk for ds.

Will it still go off quick on an aeroplane Fennel if in a cool bag?

Caribbeanqueen · 24/08/2005 14:41

We always asked them to put it in the fridge for us. Never had a problem.

Fennel · 24/08/2005 16:05

hmc ours has often gone off. I never thought of asking to put it in the fridge though . I think the formula suggestion of Ninah's is another possibility though, that would be ok.

Chuffed · 24/08/2005 21:48

MrsD take a couple of those little cartons of follow on milk from the supermarket - at least you know it is fine and won't go off. you could pack a few extra for your flight from US to NZ as well.

eidsvold · 24/08/2005 23:02

with our dd1 - when we flew - I used the tetra packs of follow onmilk and just jettisoned as I went - also meant I could take them into the country if there was any left over.

MrsDoolittle · 25/08/2005 10:44

Thank you all ladies. That's really helpful.
I think a couple of cartons of follow on milk sounds the easiest.

mrs d - if you just check that milupa link i think you'll get good advice on which formula might be best for you to use too.

MrsDoolittle · 25/08/2005 11:46

Oh hell Fennel - Don't you start !!

OP posts:
Fennel · 25/08/2005 12:18

on second thoughts, Mrs D, I suggest you try relactating and then you can bf your dd throughout the flight. easy peasy.
