We have 5 small children between us! We were wondering about a nice park but would welcome any suggestions or local knowledge

The little veggie cafe at Saint Ann's Well is lovely (fab soup), then you can go for a run around on the hills.

Here

In the Malverns themselves, or general area ?

Theres a nice park in Pershore, with a water play bit, then a selection of cafes for lunch. Rather flatter than Malvern.

Or the little steam train at Evesham Country Park is good, and it's ace for kites up there

Worcester country park has a great adventure playground and lush cakes in the cafe

West Malvern Playing Fields is lovely. Fairly easy to get to, but feels very rural, there is a play area and some woods at the bottom to explore.

If you want more central then Victoria park in Malvern Link.

If you actually want to go up on the hills, then go for the Worcester Beacon (park at the Wyche I think it's called)- you can even get up with a pushchair there if you need to.

I live here!

As far as parks go, West Malvern is lovely but quite difficult to find. (Look fir Old Hollow on a map, the park is up a track off Old Hollow near a small parking area on the side of the road.

Most tourists go to British Cap, but beware, the Malvern Hills Hotel is not child friendly.

I would massively recommend the Brewer's Arms, West Malvern as a spot for some lunch, then up the hills from there, or park near the clock tower and walk over to the Brewers.

The Kettle Sings is a nice cafe on the hills-ish.

When are you going? On Sundays, in the Winter Gardens in the summer (at 2pm I think or maybe 12???) There is always a band playing in the bandstand. There is a nice playpark there too (but no swings) and ducks in the ponds/stream.

Is it eating places, parks or something else you are looking for? Clives Fruit Farm, near Upton has animals etc. to look at. Let me know more details and I'll be able to help.

That should read "British Camp", not Cap.

Brilliant some great suggestions! We are meeting them on Friday and need to film day with 5 small children. Buggy friendly places are good although we do have baby back packs.

I guess the most important thing is entertaining the children. Somewhere picturesque would be a bonus. We were thinking of taking picnics instead of eating out but nice cafe recommendations for afternoon cups of tea would be good

I live here too loopyloops, but not local...

Did you understand where I was trying to describe on the hills? It's such a beautiful view from there, that's where I always take people when they visit. But since I don't drive myself I don't know how to describe where it is!

Great for flying kites, and picnics!

loopyloops · 02/08/2010 22:08

In that case, probably parking at and walking from/to British Camp is best, because it is easiest for pushchairs and small children. Elsewhere the hills can be quite steep. Also, it's the Big Chill festival this weekend and you can see it from British Camp.

In Barnards Green (malvern) and Ledbury there are lovely cafes for pottery painting which might be nice as it's forecast heavy rain on Friday.

If it does rain there is precious little else to do to be honest... There are a few soft play places in Worcester and one in Spring Lane, Malvern.

LauraNorder · 02/08/2010 22:10

Thank you very much very useful information

OOh Red, whereabouts are you?

Worcester Beacon is the big hill, you can get there from various places but from the Wyche it is a nice, not too steep climb.

To be honest I avoid the hills as much as possible! I hate exercise!

redhappy · 02/08/2010 22:16

I'm in Malvern Link- the flat bit!

Recently learnt that if you cross the road there is the little stepped path next to the bus stop- VERY short walk to the 'top' there!

loopyloops · 02/08/2010 22:18

I'm up past the top near the clock tower. What kids do you have? And when you say you're not local, what do you mean?

redhappy · 02/08/2010 22:22

Two of my own- boy and a girl nearly 4 and 2, and two teenage stepsons. Interested in primary school recommendations if you have any!

Well, I live here, my partner's from here, but I'm actually from another part of the country (although not that far). Only moved here in May, but we lived here for about 6 months when I was pregnant a few years ago.

So I kind of know my way around, know lots of places the 'locals' go to, but still finding my bearings too!

zandy · 02/08/2010 22:22

There is the nice big park between the swimming pool and the theatres (Priory Park) - already mentioned. Great for picnics and playing. There is a cafe at the Theatre for cups of tea etc.

Victoria park is good, that's on Pickersleigh Road at Malvern Link (quite close to the Morgan car factory if you have any car buffs in your party).

You could park in Waitrose car park and walk most places from there.

There are commons suitable for picnics and walking, too.

In the case of rain, take swimsuits and go swimming at the Splash, or to the Soft Play on Spring Lane (which I believe also has ten pin bowling and Laser Shooting - but I've not been to this).

Have a lovely day.

Zandy, do you live here too?

zandy · 02/08/2010 22:28

Yup. :D

loopyloops · 02/08/2010 22:29

Are you from here originally? Do I know you?

redhappy · 02/08/2010 22:30

Back on topic- if it does rain there's always the library which apparently has a really nice cafe now.

We are quite far down the hill, so in catchment for the Grove and St Mathias, neither of which I want. Will put down Northleigh and Somers Park, but need a third choice!

By the way, racking my brains, but can't think of any clock tower! Is it in Great Malvern? Or up past the fire station?

zandy · 02/08/2010 22:40

The Grove is a nice school. You should give it a go.

Madresfield and Malvern Parish tend to be highly rated.

I doubt if I know you, don't think I know anybody these days with babies. My youngest is 11.
