frontier land! great for kids help yourself!

The hotel you're staying in determines the value of the half board plan vouchers. If you're staying in Disneyland hotel, for example, you can eat anywhere. But if you're in one of the other hotels, you'll have different options. Either way, the vouchers have a monetary value that can be used as part payment if required.

I think the restaurant that kittycat enjoyed is called Lucky Nugget Saloon in Frontierland. This is an all you can eat lunchtime buffet with Characters. Usually 12pm to 3pm. They also to a Character tea from 5pm to 6.30pm. Both are very popular, so advance reservations are recommended, especially during school holidays. This restaurant is covered by Half Board Plus vouchers.
There are 3 categories of Half board - Standard, Plus and Premium. Granard is correct in saying that your hotel can determine which HB you have, but this is not compulsory. You can actually book any category you wish with Disney over the phone. However, if you add HB to your booking online, it only gives you the opportunity to upgrade, not downgrade.
Just because someone may be staying in the Disneyland Hotel, does not mean they will want Premium category dining, unless they wish to eat in their hotel or Premium category restaurants.
Someone may be staying in the Santa Fe budget hotel, but enjoy eating in the table service fine dining restaurants,or want Character dining, so may prefer to book HB Plus or Premium instead of Standard.
So I can't really help you unless I know which category you have booked!
Disney just assume that people will want to eat in their hotel, so automatically allocate the HB category that covers it.People staying in the 5 non Disney hotels there can also book HB if they wish, but cannot use the vouchers in their hotel( only in the Village and both parks, and the Disney owned hotels).
If you decide to use your vouchers towards the cost of a higher category meal ( as Granard mentions) they will take the vouchers at face value in euros, as if they were cash, and deduct them from your total bill. This is not the best way to use them ,as you will not get your free drinks, and you will be charged the normal restaurant prices.
Half Board is the best value if you use it to cover the whole cost of your meal, ( including one drink per person) so you really need to decide in advance which restaurants you wish to eat in, and book the correct category.

figgygirl - can i gatecrash, we're going in sept, and i was thinking of just eating when and where we like at the time, but this is sounding like not a good plan! we have four days, should i book restaurants for each day before we travel? and if so how do i know which ones to book?
we havent got hb is it cheaper to have that option?

MmeLindt · 04/08/2010 20:37

Mumtojames
We did not book ahead and had no problems finding places at a restaurant. I preferred to be flexible so that we were able to eat when it suited us.

There is a pizza/pasta place opposite Small World that was good and cheap too.

Are you staying at a Disney Hotel? If so, I would book breakfast in the park, much nicer and you can get into the park earlier than day ticket holders.

Hi,mumtojames
If you are going outside the British, Spanish and French school holidays, the hotels and parks will not be so busy, so you should be able to book when you are there without any problems.
Character meals are very popular, so it is worth booking them in advance to avoid disappointment. It does not cost anything to book, and you can easily make changes or cancel when you are there.Dining reservations only ask for your name.
Sometimes I end up changing all my reservations in one way or another!
What dates are you going? The September parks hours are now available.
news.disneylandparis.co.uk/calendar/index.xhtml?
You will see that some weekdays both parks close at 6pm, so you cannot have dinner in the parks on those days, only lunch.
You can eat in any of the Disney hotels, or in the restaurants in the Disney Village.Bear in mind that with everyone leaving the parks at 6pm, restaurants will be busy at that time, so reservations are recommended to save having to wait.
If you book Half Board, you can only use the vouchers in a Disney owned hotel or restaurant.
All the Disney owned hotels get Extra Magic Hours, but breakfast in the park is not always offered. When it is, it is not before 8am, so you miss EMH if you have breakfast at that time, when others are going on rides.
If they offer EMH, book early breakfast, say 7.15am, so you can be at the park for 8am opening.
EMH is usually only in the Disneyland Park, not the Studios.

Sorry-
It is definitely better to book Half Board, as it covers the whole meal plus a soft drink or bottle of water.
It will cost more if you pay cash when you are there.
The HB category usually goes by the hotel you are staying in, but this is not compulsory- you can choose if you add it to your booking over the phone with Disney. If you try to book it online, it will only let you book the given hotel category or upgrade, not downgrade.
Standard HB covers the basic restaurants and buffets, and the buffets in the Hotels Cheyenne and Santa Fe.
Plus HB covers all the above, and also some very nice table service restaurants in the DL Park, and Lucky Nugget Saloon Character lunch buffet in Frontierland. ( 12pm - 3pm so OK for September). Also buffets in the Hotels New York, Sequoia Lodge, and Newport Bay ( around Lake Disney).
Premium basically covers everything.Complete choice, including all Character meals, and Buffalo Bills WW Show.
If you decide to eat in a higher category restaurant, you can use your vouchers like cash, and pay the extra.
Read up on the restaurants online, and decide where you may wish to eat, then book the best HB plan.
