I have just across this place and I think it looks a really interesting place to explore. What are the best times of year to go (don't want it too rainy or too hot with a 4 year old)

I stayed there when I was travelling 10 years ago. Lovely and crocs in the lake where the bar is. Best time to go is feb when the Hamatan (a wind) is blowing.

Is the lake fenced off? If not I think I might give it a miss until DS is older cos I wouldn't be able to relax with him around open water at the moment.

Ah now that I can't remember sorry. The only place I saw it from was the bar and its fenced off there.

I love Ghana, one of my favourite African countries. I have some very good friends there who send me some hotel recommendations/beach places not long ago. If you are interested CAT me and I'll rummage around and see if I can send it to you.

Ghana is lovely, I spent a couple of months there volunteering with a friend a few years ago. Cape Coast is nice, interesting museum on slave history, great fishing boats & market, the rainforest near there is great and they have a suspended walkway which is amazing. We stayed at that place you linked to, I can't remember I'm afraid if it is fenced off or not, we walked out along the walkway shown in the picture and did indeed see some of the crocs. I found the people in Ghana really friendly.

Only thing I would say if you're taking a child is that except at expensive places in Accra it was pretty difficult to get decent western food and Ghanaian food is hot and spicy. I found it very hard to find things I could eat so depending on your ds's eating habits that may be difficult!

Oh and one of my favourite memories is going on a walking safari to see the elephants at the national park in the north, it was magical, (name escapes me at the moment) but transport there can be difficult and slow.

There aren't that many tourists which does mean the infrastructure is sometimes unreliable (but the friendliness and helpfulness of the people makes up for it!)

The best guide book which we found generally reliable was this one

ghana is a really interesting place to go and definately wirth a visit if you like places off the tourist trail, however be aware that you will probably need some extra vaccinations eg yellow fever and you will definately need to take antimalarials as will dc's both before during and after the holiday if that doesn't phase you then go for it!
