Child friendly B&B/hotel/self catering in BRISTOL?

We are going to a christening in Bristol which starts at 9am and, not wanting to leave the house at some ungodly hour with 2 DSs in tow, think it might be an idea to stay somewhere overnight. Needs to be quite central and not too expensive obviously. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks

Bumping this up to ask if anyone has any personal reccommendations for Bristol? There will be 5 adults and 2 young children - 3 of the adults could share. Anyone? Friendly B&B near Clifton?
Please?!

Hotel du vin is lovely, walking distance to Bristol cathedral and they do ajoining rooms if you don't want to sleep in the same room as children or, I think, cots if you do. Their rates go down at the weekend too. Oh, I just realised it's Clifton Cathedral, not Bristol cathedral, so hdv isn't walking distance then! You probably want one of the hotels/b&bs on St Pauls Rd in Clifton, don't know any of them though, sorry but they would be walking distance (15-20 mins walk at most) to Clifton Cathedral. Or look on laterooms.com, big discounts. I wouldn't recommend The Brigstow though, stayed recently and it was terrible.

have a look at this

sorry it took i while, had to phone a friend who stayed there to remind me what it was called (i live in Bristol - they came down and we spent the day at the zoo, they said it was alright)

Tommy · 29/08/2005 20:05

thanks WWW - yes it's the Catholic cathedral but walking distance isn't a problem as we will have the car anyway. It's the first time we've stayed in a hotel with the DSs (except when DS1 was 9 weeks old so that doesn't count!)so I'm a bit anxious about it all (as ever - god knows why)so I suppose I'd really love someone to tell me about a good experience! Will check out the Hotel du Vin and the other website - thanks.
Still be grateful for any more ideas

The youth hostel would be reasonable and helpful for children, i.e. a kitchen where you can make meals/sandwiches/warm bottles etc. It's central and accomodation is very good, mostly en-suite etc.

Tommy · 29/08/2005 20:06

thanks georgievickylou (good long name BTW)I'll check that out too

If you're anxious and can afford it do Hotel Du Vin then, I've seen one of the adjoining rooms and they're nice and there would be enough of a distance from other rooms that you wouldn't worry if your children made a racket (maybe that's not what's worrying you though!) The service there was fantastic when we went too, very helpful staff. How old are your children? If they're v small you could probably get them in the same room as you which would be cheaper.

Tommy · 29/08/2005 20:19

my boys are 3y7m and just 2. Not really worried about them disturbing others () but mostly about them not sleeping in a strange room and DH and I sitting in a darkened hotel room for the evening while boys are asleep - they go to bed quite early normally and are pretty rubbish at staying up late.
(You can tell we normally just go and stay at Grandma's can't you?!)

Hi there. My mum always used to stay here It's tourist board reccomended, in Clifton, St Pauls Rd as WWW recommended. It also has a really funny little restuarant called Le chasseur, which used to do 3 course set menu for about £14. Really lovely food. Used to be mine and DP's fav. It's clean and tidy and friendly and close to where you want to be. I'm sure the would be very welcoming to children too. Enjoy your trip to Bristol, I'm .

Tommy · 29/08/2005 20:28

thanks Flossam - I'm sure you could come along if you wanted - I think the whole world and her husband have been invited

You had any joy? i'll ask the girls in work 2morow if they can think of anywhere if you like

Tommy · 30/08/2005 21:14

thanks - we've more or less decided on the serviced apartments. I spoke to them today and they have one for us and for my sister's family as well. Will book it tomorrow. It is a bit more expensive than the YHA which I did look at but my irrational anxiety made me think it might be "safer" than the YHA - god knows what I think I mean by that but DH has also done some research on them all so we're going to splash out some of his inheritance and stay there.
Thank you for all your help - it's been REALLY useful

If it's the apartments down on the waterfront (harbourside) they are gorgeous.. well worth it..

Tommy · 28/09/2005 20:44

Had a great weekend! I can thoroughly reccommend the apartments (not by waterfront though - very near Templemeads) and we got a weekend discount. DSs both asleep by 8pm and we drank wine and ate pizza in the living room!
Really good idea - thanks for all your help
