Days out in Norfolk

beepbeep · 17/07/2010 20:43

We are visiting Norfolk (staying near Cromer) at the end of August for a week, (myself, DH and 3 DCs - 7m, 2y & 3y) and looking at days out they (hopefully!) would enjoy, bearing in mind we haven't got too much money to spend!!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bewilderwood is fabulous, though a bit pricey.

Also here and here you can use your Tesco vouchers to get in for a fraction of the price.

To be honest just pack a picnic and a flask and head to the beach.

Beach
Crabbing
Dinousaur park - not cheap but full day out for all! (think all kids would be free)
Blickling Hall give you bug pots to go round grounds with and would just have to pay for adults.
When u get to Norfolk head to tourist board and pick up a whats on book (think is pink) has loads of vouchers.

you really don't need to spend any money, go crabbing and play in the sea! There are also some marshes and a small eco centre at Cley I think, try looking for Cley Spy. It's v near Cromer.
If you feel like a splurge I can thoroughly recommend the Poppy Line from Sheringham to Holt, whole day out there.
Give the mucklebrough collection a miss (tanks and stuff) not really for kids, just die hard military hardware fans.

Wroxham Barns is nice and good for little ones. There is a small farm, and a mini-funfair. The shops aren't my cup of tea but the children like playing there and we get an ice cream.

Beach, beach and more beach - try Sea Palling if you get boreds of of Cromer/Sheringham. It's fab. Crabbing, kites, fossil hunting.

Cromer Carnival is 14-20th August. Kids would like that if you're around then.

Can recommend the kids events put on by the council especially water rockets and shelter building - here.

Rock pooling at East Runton is fantastic.

Oooh! We will be in Cley then too.
There is a lovely little play area at the village hall and the walk to the windmill is nice.

Fruit picking at Wiveton Hall fruit farm (Gorgeous cafe there too).

Seals at Blakeney point.

Beach at Holkham (if its good enough for HRH!)

Beach at Wells.

Country parks at Sheringham and Holt.

Indoor waterpark at Sheringham if it rains (which it won't)

Go and look in the small museum in Cromer (sort of behind the church) which has exhibits of the ice age mammoth found on West Runton Beach, and they have photocopied sheets of what to look out for on the beach - various fossils etc.
Yes, rock pooling on West Runton Beach, it's also a great beach for sand at low tide.
Blakeney: sit on the quay and catch crabs, or use a blow-up dinghy on the creek at low tide.
Wells Beach is fabulous for sand, kite-flying and swimming in the channel at low tide - also has trampolines, crazy golf and a rowing lake by the beach car park.
Feed the ducks at the pond at Salthouse, visit the Bird Reserve / conservation centre between Cley and Salthouse - it has telescopes trained on the marsh, and a webcam that you can operate from the room at the back to see close-ups of birds. It's a SMALL outing, though!
You can take a trip to see the seals on Blakeney Point from Morston - not cheap, but you will definitely see loads of seals - trips are on the high tide, timetable here or google Temples or Beans for alternative companies (best to book)
Sheringham is a nice little centre.

N Norfolk is best for pottering on the beaches, really!

You can get along the coast road on the Coasthopper buses if you are not driving.

we stayed near Sea Palling last year and it was gorgeous, very child friendly. Nice icecream shop, small arcade suitable for children, lovely chippy. Sandy beach with lifeguard, clean toilets etc. Cheapish parking.

Oh and the local pub was welcoming to dcs, they were relegated to a room that was also the dog room. Mutually convenient for most dcs and dogs.
