Anyone done a canoe trip on the Wye with small children?

And if so, how was it? DH really wants to, I don't fancy it. The DCs are 2 and 4, the trip is 5 hours or so, and once in the boat you pretty much can't get out except for a few places, or so I understand!

Im not looking forward to it...!

We've done a half day (can't remember how long, but less than 5 hours) a couple of times last year with DD, who was 10 then. I think she'd have found a longer trip boring, even though she's into wildlife and enjoyed the paddling. There really wasn't much scope for getting out on the stretch we did. I would not recommend it for children as young as yours; I would heartily recommend it when they are old enough to be fascinated by swans and a possible kingfisher or two, bladders big enough for the duration and mature enough to be sure they will not have a tantrum (and also big enough to 'help' paddle without promptly losing the paddle!). Its a big river, if they fell out a child that small could be in serious trouble.

I rather doubt the canoe hirers would let toddlers do it anyway - I was about to recommend Slimbridge's 'canoe safari' as more appropriate in roughly the same area, but IIRC even that has a lower limit of 5 years (go there anyway, for welly land - my DD was too old by the time they built it)

It really is worth leaving activities like this trip till the kids are old enough for you all to enjoy it safely.

I've done the half day trip from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat a few times. It's harder work that it sounds and I personally wouldn't recommend it for two and four yr olds because they may well get bored and/or tired and cold too. It's definitely not unheard of people to capsize (seen it happen a few times myself).

There are places to stop along the way, mostly in the second half of the paddle, and if it's a really lovely day weather wise you can have a sploosh around in the water.

There aren't any very rough bits on that particular stretch, just a couple of places where the water runs a bit faster. The rapids are just past the canoe centre at symonds yat and if you've hired a boat they'll ask you not to go down them without supervision.

Thats rather what I thought. Many thanks for the feedback. Might encourage DH to rethink...

(And yes, welly land at Slimbridge is indeed fab!)

If he just fancies a bit of a paddle, you can hire canoes from the symonds yat centre for an hour at a time and paddle upstream from there for a bit, then back again when someone gets grumpy

We are meant to be going with mates, but they dont have small children.

My main concern is needing to get one out of the canoe, and then being stranded in the middle of nowhere with a tired/tantrummy/uncooperative child. The car will be left back at the boathouse you see.

Small paddle near the boathouse sounds much more manageable!

Think I need to let DH read this thread later!

Paddle upstream? The whole point is to start upstream and let the river do a lot of the work to get you back down. Let your DH do that if he wants!

Anyway, I just checked on one of the canoe hire websites:

Anyone under that age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and no children under the age of 4, this is for insurance reasons.

...and then I looked at a couple more, they had minimum age 4 and 5. Another says 'You should be able to swim at least 50 metres'

I think you're off the hook for a couple of years at least - personally I'd go with that 50 metres in addition to the criteria I already listed.

Tell you what, I'll tell you the worst thing that happened to me on that stretch, that should put him off

It was a beautiful sunny day, we got in the boats at kerne bridge, two canadian canoes, each with one adult and one eleven yr old child in, and me in a kayak. Paddled downstream a bit and I realised that the river was quite swollen compared to how it had been on the times I'd been down that stretch before, but it was fine - the first bit of fast water was quite exhilarating after half an hour of gentle paddling, and then one of the canadian canoes got stuck on some stones. I had to climb out of my kayak and help dislodge it, they went down that bit sideways (quickest way to capsize).

It was fine for another hour so, and then a wind whipped up and it was more than a bit of a breeze. There is a corner on the river and the wind was cutting across it sharply. About 30 or more canoes (not kayaks) were stuck on the corner because every time they tried to paddle round it, their boats were blown into the opposite bank. In my kayak I had to sit watching the mayhem, paddling backwards for almost an hour and in that time only three boats managed to get round, everyone else was desperately paddling hard trying to get round the bend and ending up exactly where they started.

Then one of our canoes capsized - The adult and child had to struggle together to get the boat to the bank but it was quite steep and they only managed to get back in the boat because several kindly people gave them a hand steadying the boat and hauling them back in.

I was helpless because I couldn't leave my kayak, all I could do was watch from a distance.

After that everyone was utterly exhausted and it was another four miles back to base. Those that had capsized were also shaken up and very cold and wet.

There you go, tell him that!

OOh, glad I didn't read that before we went (also Kerne Bridge to Yat, after lots of rain which may be why I reckoned there wasn't much mooring possible). Might have put us off, but it was great - but definitely Big Kid not Little Kid activity.

Oh crikey! Some useful info here! Thanks everyone, its made my mind up, and possibly DHs too (tho he wont admit it yet!)

Your DH just needs to go away and think about it for 6 years or so, and then he'll be right!
