Sorry - I know this is quite an old message, but just spotted it. I grew up very close to the Giant's Causeway and family still live in the area. Other places to visit: Old Bushmills Distillery, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge (National Trust) - but maybe not entirely suitable for a 5-year-old. There are lots of gorgeous sandy beaches in the area - Portballintrae is lovely, as is White Rocks, Portstewart Stand and (further west) Castlerock and Benone. Not great on hotels as always stay with family, but the Bushmills Inn is probably the best known hotel in the area - only a mile or two from the Giant's Causeway and in the summer there's a little train that runs between Bushmills and the Causeway. Not in the middle of nowhere exactly - but quite a long way from airports. There are 3 airports in NI: Belfast City, Belfast International (close to Antrim) and Derry (small airport only). The best way to get around and see some of the North Antrim coast is likely to be by hiring a car. Hope that's helpful and not too late ...

Oh happy memories of a holiday DH and I went on in about 1998! We stayed at the Old Bushmills Inn which was fab - and amazingly not expensive (tight budget at the time!) - no idea what it's like now but I remember afternoons/evenings spent in the bar and I think a hidden library?!

We also got the train into Belfast from Coleraine one day and did a bit of shopping and visited the Crown Liquor Salon - IIRC the only pub owned by the National Trust and opposite the Europa Hotel, the most bombed hotel in Europe.

The only disappointment was that we went in March which was off season. Not only was the rope bridge closed it was actually not there - they must take it down for the winter

Would definitely love to go back. OP - where are you? We're in Scotland and got the car ferry over from Cairnryan

Oh yes, I think you're right, bluejeans - they do take the rope bridge down out of season.
