Things to do in Perth

Any tips on things to do in/around Perth with a 2.5yr old?

We will have a hire car so can go outside the city a bit.

We are there for 2 weeks and have a weekend at Maragret River planned and that's about it so far!

Rottnest is fab, get the ferry from Barrack Street rather than Fremantle and you cruise down the river first.

The Zoo is good, and King's Park.

City Beach was my favourite, but Scarborough and Cottesloe great too.

A wander in Fremantle and the Jail are good.

Um, that's where I run out of suggestions. I was there as a 21yr old backpacker, so the rest of my suggestions not so good for a 2yr old!
Perth is a lovely City.

Caversham wildlife park is fantastic. Your 2.5 year old will be able to handfeed kangaroos!

The family area at king's park is amazing.

Playpark at hillary's is good fun as is every beach here.

Beatty park swimming pool is good.

The zoo.

When are you coming?

Have you any plans for Margaret River? Are you actually staying in MR or a town outside? Can recommend good places to go that have space for your DC to walk around if you need them. I have a 2 year old!

Hello tefal we are coming on 2nd October.

We are staying at Bunker Bay when we go to Margaret River - the rest of the time we are staying with friends in Clarkson.

DS would love to handfeed kangaroos so that is a must!

I stayed in a Backpackers round the corner from Beatty Park Pool and once saw Isla Fisher there!

We loved:

Perth Zoo
Perth Aquarium (AQWA)
Fremantle, especially fish and chips at Cicerellos
Caversham Wildlife Park
Kings Park has a really nice play park
Cottesloe beach
Penguin Island (you get the ferry over from Rockingham, which also has a lovely beach)

Have a great time, Perth is lovely

If you go to Caversham Park then take your swimmers with you. There is an outdoor pool area and picnic area on the otherside of the carpark. Might be a bit cold for swimming but if you get a warm enough day it would be good for a paddle.

There are also old trains and tractors to play on too.

Bunker Bay is lovely. You can do some shopping in Dunsborough and spend time on the beaches there. Very, very safe for toddlers as the water is very calm, warm and not very deep.

Busselton is worth a visit and a walk along the jetty - if they've finished the renovations though.

You can visit Metricup bird park. Small family owned place. Very informative and good for all the family.

Fudge factory and chocolate factory are good too.

Simmo's ice cream is also worth a visit - big play area there too.

As for wineries/breweries to visit with a toddler, we've always gone to:

Occy's. Between busselton and dunsborough. Good brewery and they have a play area and small toys. We stop there just to stretch out legs for half an hour or so before heading further South.

Bootleg brewery is good for food and play!

Wise Winery is my favourite. Spectacular food and the most amazing views. Play are for children but not up top where the restaurant is - that said....it is special!

Anyway, I am wittering on now and you may already have your plans but these are just some of the things we like to do when we head South.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Have a great time!

Another suggestion, if you are down that way, Busselton Pier is the longest in the southern hemisphere and worth going for a walk along it. It's a nice seaside town and I had some good fish and chips there.

I agree that the aquarium in Perth is good (the one at Hillarys).
There was a bit when I was there where you could touch and pick up creatures.
The dolphin show was good too, though the dolphins all died a few weeks later.

Anyone who lives in Perth would probably remember. There were stories that they were poisoned

poppy34 · 12/07/2010 18:57

PDr am marking this as we are going with dd (similar age) in December - have a great time

tefal · 13/07/2010 14:59

Yes, the dolphins were poisioned. It was horrible. Can't remember why now though.

Top tip for visiting caversham - take one of those handbag sizes dettol sterilising handwash things (you know the stuff you don't need water for). After you've fed and stroked the roos you'd need to walk back to the main gates for a toilet to wash your hands.

I also forgot about caversham they have a small animal area too where there are baby sheep, goats, rabbits and stuff too.

Fremantle is a must do. Have an ale at Little Creatures and the Sail & Anchor and The LeftBank.

Pizza is a must at Pizza Bella Roma on the coffee strip.
