I’d like an idea, roughly, of the decade.
Thanks

I think 1900's.

Mustardbay · 15/11/2020 15:18

1890s or 1900 I'd guess

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 15/11/2020 15:21

I'd say 1890s

BeaMends · 15/11/2020 15:30

1900 - 1905, the man is posed quite informally, isn't he, which makes me think it is circa 1900 rather than 1890's.

cautiouscovidity · 15/11/2020 15:48

I would guess 1890s-1900s too. Late Victorian era.

AnnieMaul · 15/11/2020 16:05

If you google the photographers their photographs all seem to be dated 1890-1908, so likely between that period.

DrCoconut · 15/11/2020 16:14

I was going to say 1900-1910. It looks Edwardian to me.

Gotobloodysleep · 15/11/2020 16:22

The photographer Hellis and sons had a studio in London from 1835-1895. So some time between then.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:26

I would say earlier, more like 1870’s or 80’s

If you look at the skirt it has no fullness at the front but pleats at the side. This is typical of the ‘bustle’ shape of that era.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:27

Although the bustle went in for quite a long time.

Pan2 · 15/11/2020 16:29

1884

1400spincycle · 15/11/2020 16:32

1890 ish. although i think given the man’s ‘working’ clothes and their age it might be later... I don’t think they would up to the minute in fashion? The props in the studio look very victorian to me.

MadameMinimes · 15/11/2020 16:36

I’d say somewhere between 1885 and 1895.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 15/11/2020 16:36

Late 1800s I’d say by her dress (so she isn’t an older lady wearing old clothes)

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:40

It’s very hard to date by era as people wore clothes for much much longer.

Late Victorian/early Edwardian. The wallpaper and curtains are very Arts and Crafts influenced. So by the time they got it on the wall, 1890’s?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 15/11/2020 16:47

Do you know why they are, OP?

Toddlerteaplease · 15/11/2020 16:50

1870's to 80's. The waist isn't quite as tiny as later on and she's not got the button chop sleeves of the 1890's

AlwaysLatte · 15/11/2020 16:50

1890

Toddlerteaplease · 15/11/2020 16:51

Mutton chop

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:59

Leg o’ mutton sleeves?

AdaColeman · 15/11/2020 16:59

Hellis was a very successful photographer with a large chain of studios all across London.
The firm changed its name to Hellis & Sons in 1887, so your photograph is later than that.
There has been a lot of work done on dating the various styles of mounts the company used, which might give you a more accurate date for your photograph.
Perhaps contact The Science Museum, they have an Hellis archive I believe, so might be able to help you date your photograph.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:59

Toddlertea, that’s my thinking. But then l thought maybe she couldn’t afford them, they used a lot of fabric.

DramaAlpaca · 15/11/2020 17:01

I think it's late Victorian or early Edwardian, so late 1890s to early 1900s.

Gingernaut · 15/11/2020 17:08

The chain of photographers packed up shop in 1928
