Number the Stars

Grumblyberries · 23/08/2020 09:57

King of Shadows (Susan Cooper)
Rosemary Sutcliffe
for Canadian or American history: Dear Canada/Dear America diary series

(these might be a little young I guess).

Grumblyberries · 23/08/2020 09:59

Journey to the River sea and others by Eva Ibbotson

BigFatLiar · 23/08/2020 10:00

Anne Frank's diary
Some of the biographies of the pilots (Badder etc)
Look on Amazon for books on the landgirls, factory workers, convoys.

itssquidstella · 23/08/2020 10:02

Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen
Smith by Leon Garfield
Street Child and Children of Winter by Berlie Doherty
The Rope School by Sam Llewelyn

Grumblyberries · 23/08/2020 10:04

was there an Eva Ibbotson one (or someone else?) about slave trade, think it was a girl, daughter of a slave trader perhaps, who was the main character? Something about them trying to marry her off young to a plantation owner, details are all fuzzy now, but an interesting perspective

Grumblyberries · 23/08/2020 10:05

(sorry, my suggestions were not mostly WW2, but general historical fiction, as I thought at first you said you'd already read enough WW2 ones)

allhappeningatonce · 23/08/2020 10:06

Anything by Michael mopurgo.
Also check out an Irish publisher called O'Brien it publishes a huge range of historical fiction for that age range. Probably available on amazon. A lot will be irish centred - would highly recommend 'under the hawthorn tree' about the Irish famine but the story would resonate with any child that age. Ww2 wise, safe harbour and faraway home are both great. Another book called once, about the Holocaust will look like an easy read but is actually quite deep. The boy in the stripped pyjamas would be similar.
Hopefully your local library opens soon, they normally have a wealth of fiction for kids of that age.

Grumblyberries · 23/08/2020 10:07

For WW2 - The Sky is Falling (Kit Pearson) - trilogy

Headunderthecovers · 23/08/2020 10:12

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1095882.MischlingSecondDegree I found this book interesting at a similar age and The endless steepe.

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/08/2020 10:27

Wow, so many responses.
Some of the recommendations she has already read but will check the others.

@allhappeningatonce omg Under the Hawthorn Tree! I loved that book when I read it as a child but I'd forgotten all about it!

itssquidstella · 23/08/2020 10:46

The Boy with the Bronze Axe by Kathleen Fiddler is also exceptional.

ShoeJunkie · 23/08/2020 10:49

Also the sequel to The Machine Gunners - Fathom Five.

imayhavelostmymarbles · 23/08/2020 10:51

My history obsessed DS also loved Judith Kerr - Bombs on Aunt Dainty.
I will be looking at all the suggestions too! Thanks
OP- what about American prairie crossings as an left field. Children on the Oregon Trail?

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/08/2020 11:22

I will try and remember the books she has read so far to be useful for others

Last train from Kummersdorf - leslie Wilson
Wolf by wolf - Ryan Graudin
The lions of Little Rock - Kristin Levine
Saving Rafael - Leslie Wilson
Soldier x - Don Wulffson
Revolution is not a dinner party - Ying hang Compestine
Someone named Eva - Joan Wolf
Inside out and back again - Thanhha Lai
Journey of the pale bear - Susan Fletcher
Secrets of the terracotta soldier

The Bridge home - Padma venkataraman
Chains triology

She is obsessed with history and is probably the only subject she enjoys at school. She is fortunate enough to have good history teachers so far..

The Kite Rider, Geraldine McCaughrean

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/08/2020 19:49

Thanks all, really can't wait for the libraries to open so we could get the books recommended here. Our local library was really good and would source the books for you from other libraries.. I miss chatting with the two brilliant librarians, they were good in recommending book titles for her.
