I would like to obtain a birth certificate and have all the details from find my past ie page and volume number, details of parents and name but don't know the first part of the date of birth. So I know ??/oct/76, can't seem to be able to order it on the GRO website, without puttingin a full date of birth. Any advice of how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.

If you've got the GRO reference, year and quarter from Findmypast you can order from the GRO web site without an exact date.

Thanks for your reply, I must be doing something wrong because it has the date of birth as a compulsory field marked with a * and I can't seem to get round it.

If you go on WWW.gro.gov.uk you need to enter the year, first name and surname when birth was registered. Then add the GRO index information as requested. Is that the ordering service you used?

Yes it is but the date of birth field comes up as compulsory as it is within the last 50 years.

If you have the reference, can you not look up that page online, and read the date from there?

That's a new feature I haven't seen before. You might be best giving them a ring. They are very helpful.

I will ring them this week. Thank you.

Hi,
Just wondering if there are any updates on this topic. I have the exact references from ancestry for a birth certificate but do not know the DOB of the person. I rang the GRO and asked to order the certificate. The woman I spoke with was really rude and point blank refused my request even though it is a birth certificate a family member - she more or less accused me of wanting to commit some type of fraud. Then told me I should call my family member and ask. This is outrageous - like most families we have our differences and they don’t think much of my genealogy hobby, so I really don’t want to speak about it with them. In any case it was definitely not this gro’s woman’s right to tell me that I should call them.
Anyway I just want to ask if there is a genealogy service I can use to order this certificate without having to rely directly on GRO? If memory serves me well there used to be some organisation that does this. Probably a bit expensive but GRO is not cheap …for frankly a not great service, even though they advertise as providing help on family history research.
Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.
