What jobs did your Grandparents do?

And your Great Grandparents....AND what do you do? I'm just interested in the journeys...and I know this isn't really an AIBU but hey...there are more people here!

Here are mine....

Maternal Grandfather: Steelworker
Maternal Grandmother: Cleaner

Paternal Grandfather: Steelworker
Paternal Grandmother: Waitress

Great Maternal Grandfather: Boilermaker/Steelworker
Great Maternal Grandmother: Maid in a private house

Great Paternal Grandfather: Docker
Great Paternal Grandmother: Cleaner

Me: Actor and copywriter

I want to see other people's lists if possible...I find it fascinating that such a short time ago, some of my relatives couldn't write...a couple of those listed signed their marriage certificates with an X and beside that, the Registrar had written "Her mark".

It seems so strange...so few years have passed but so much social change has gone on. What will OUR great grandchildren see when they look at our records?

No idea about my dads side but my maternal grands was a nurse and midwife and my maternal grandfather was in the merchant navy and later became a river pilot.
I'm a nurse. As was my mum.

BeautifulRedBoots · 18/06/2016 09:02

What an interesting thread! Very thought provoking. I am ashamed to say that I have no idea what even my grandparents did, although I do know that my paternal great grandfather was a circus performer.

AngelBlue12 · 18/06/2016 09:02

Paternal:

Farmers (own farm, large land owners)

Maternal:

Grandad: Army then Banking
Grandma: Secretary then housewife

GGD: Vet
Grandma: lady of leisure!

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 18/06/2016 09:02

Great grandparents - gosh, no idea. I think one may have been a plumber.

My dads dad was a vicar and his wife a housewife. Mums dad was a miner and his wife worked in a toffee factory.

It always surprises me when people my age knew their great grandparents!

LemonRedwood · 18/06/2016 09:03

Paternal
GGF: Army officer then policeman
GGM: SAHP
GF: Army officer then policeman
GM: SAHP

Maternal:

Me: teacher

Just5minswithDacre · 18/06/2016 09:05

I suppose I am always faintly suspicious of those 'tell me about yourself' OPs that seek to elicit personal information....not that I'm troll-hunting, I just think that it's not always a brilliant idea to broadcast personal details, even in the most innocent of of contexts.

Me too. Fascinating to read other people's though.

tibbawyrots · 18/06/2016 09:05

Do I need to go and buy a Daily Mail or just continue reading? Hmm

contrary13 · 18/06/2016 09:05

Maternal Grandfather: Soldier who, upon demob, drove “a bin-man's lorry” (to quote him).
Maternal Grandmother: Secretary with thwarted musical ambitions (she was accepted to study music at a top London school, which coming from the wilds of Wales was quite impressive in those days, but had to abandon her dreams when she was found to be pregnant with my DM).

Paternal Grandfather: Sailor.
Paternal Grandmother: Housewife, who drew a private income from the family farm.

Great Maternal Grandfather (1): Worked in the mines.
Great Maternal Grandmother (1): Housewife.

Great Maternal Grandfather (2): Farmer.
Great Maternal Grandmother (2): Farmer's wife, who drew a private income and owned property in her own right.

Great Paternal Grandfather (1): High ranking Army official.
Great Paternal Grandmother (2): An Officer's Wife.

Great Paternal Grandfather (2): Farmer.
Great Paternal Grandmother (2): Author.

Me: Forensic Archaeologist (and Mum!)

Nepotism · 18/06/2016 09:06

Both grandfathers: soldiers
Great grandfather: soldier and policeman

Grandmothers and great grandmothers; full time mothers to lots of kids, in one case spanning
both wars.

Me: sales

NapQueen · 18/06/2016 09:06

Maternal Grandfather - no idea he left when my mum was born
Maternal Grandmother - SAHM to the eight kids her dh had abandoned

Paternal Grandfather - origin unknown
Paternal Grandmother - singer in a club, prostitute (hence the "origin unknown"), clipper on the buses

It's a wonder my parents turned out smashing! Both of them have strong work ethic and family values.

NapQueen · 18/06/2016 09:07

Oh and no idea about my Great Grandparents.

OddBoots · 18/06/2016 09:07

Both my grandmothers made and trimmed hats
Both my grandfathers worked at a car factory, one on the press and one on colour matching - the one doing colour matching was colour blind but apparently that made him more sensitive to subtle shade differences in the same colour.

These jobs probably give a very good idea about the town from which I herald.

I know one of my great grandfathers was a master builder and another a miner, I am not sure about any of the others.

MsMermaid · 18/06/2016 09:08

tigermoll · 18/06/2016 09:10

Me too. Fascinating to read other people's though

Really? Long lists of the previous occupations of strangers? Fair enough, but I think you might be in the minority -- most people seem keener to blurt out their own lists rather than read other people's. That's why these threads are so effective, I suppose.

mogloveseggs · 18/06/2016 09:11

Maternal grandma didn't work
Maternal grandad farmer
Maternal great grandad publican (till he drank it away!)

I know, I'm a grumpy old mare Grin

But please, people -- if you absolutely MUST list what your grandparents did for a living, leave your own occupation out. These threads are searchable and live forever, and (although I'm sure the OP is on the level) not everyone out there is cyberland is, OK?
