Latin for beginners

Following on from the lapsed classicists thread, I have been really inspired to see so many people interested in learning Latin.

I thought I would make a tentative offer: if you are interested in learning Latin and would like to do it with a bit of support here, I'm very happy to help. If you have a go at the Cambridge Latin Course on your own, I could answer questions and explain bits if you get stuck or check translations. It sounds as though there are a lot of others out there who'd be equally/more capable of doing the same if there's a lot of take-up.

Is that something anyone would like? I'd love to be talking about Caecilius and co again.

Just had a go translating In Triclinio.......surely I must be wrong and Caecilius and his friend are not pleased with the slave girl, then going to sleep. While Grumio, sneaks in eats the peacock and is pleased with the slave girl.

My over active innuendometer is at wow Grin very childish of me!

If I was a 12 year old boy learning this I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face. Will be asking DS why he didn't share later :)

Not only does the slave girl please Grumio, but Grumio also pleases the slave girl. All over the table with the peacock (which is excellent) Grin

Does anyone know if the materials for Cambridge Latin Course are hideously expensive? I went to a big comprehensive so Latin was never on my academic agenda but I do want to learn...

Oh crikey. I'm old enough to have done Latin at school, many, many moons ago. I used to like it. Don't know that I can remember an awful lot of it now.

mea commemoratio evacuatur

(Is that right?)

Zebra - i got the text book, students book and answer book from Amazon, they weren't too bad. Am slowly working my way through on my own, checking with DS2 to see if my pronounciation is correct. Have had a break over Christmas and a foray into Ancient Greek so just starting back up again. Have a MN Academy Latin course in a couple of weeks...that was expensive. Should be good though :)
