I'm a family worker and my colleague is doing it currently combined with working. She spends approx 3 days a week in College. Placements are full time and they vary between Colleges but her first one is 6 months.

It's not a particularly school compatable job if you do children but you would have homework time whilst they were at school

I did the social work degree with 3 children and had my 4th during the second year. It is possible. You can do it with children and you can work as a social worker with children. There is lots of juggling but then thats true with lots of jobs and the majority of the time I have the felxibility within my hours to ensure I don't miss anything at school eg recorder assembly, class assembly etc. Do you start in Sept or are you currently considering applying?

Hmm, I to am considering applying to do this.
I have two DD's under 2, just can't fathom out how we'd afford childcare.
The ironic thing is I was accepted to do this pre DD's and decided not to!

I have just qualified. I was fortunate that at my uni we were only in lectures three days a week. I know other courses often have lectures scattered over the whole week.

Obviously placements were full-time though.

Kizzycat - there is funding for childcare. We managed ok during my degree, with the student loan the bursary and a couple of other loans. I use the word loan but some of them you don't have to pay back. We worked out it was better for me to do it full time rather than part time as I could not have managed to work and study with 4 dds. As with most proff qualifications the course is very full time. My placements were flexible as I had childcare responsibilities, this can be negotiated at your pre placement meeting - just be clear about what you need. Its good practice for being a social worker when you have to stand up for yourself everyday in one way or another!!!!!!!!!!!
