Hi all would appreciate some advice. Changing my career and just about to hit thirty with two young children aged five and seven. Want to become a building surveyor and in order to get onto the course i need to either complete a Btec, an access course or a national certificate. Unfortunately i do not have enough credits to do a HNC. The nearest Access course is in Greenwich full time, so i need to resign from my job, which is fine i can afford to, and just do a bit of bar work in the evenings. Problem is it miles away from me and i cannot drop the children early enough to school to make it through London by 9.30. The national certificate, Guildford college has stopped doing. So my only other option is to do an ICS home learn BTEC. But I am worried as i have read horror stories about home learning courses. Would a college or University frown upon a home learning qualification even if it is Edexcel approved? Unfortunately Open University do not cover construction but if anyone knows of any good home learning companies or has any experience of them including ICS i would be really grateful.

In general home learning is well thought of because it shows motivation and self discipline. I would just check with the universities you are interested in before you start though just to make sure.
