A-Levels or access course for nursing??

Can anyone help about what I'd be best to do to get into a nursing course.

I already have 2 A-Levels but pretty crap grades from ages ago and not science related.

I also have an HND, again not science related and 8 years ago. It's borderline points for the uni I want to get into - has to be merit but mine is right on pass/merit and since it was that long ago, don't think it would really count.

They don't have access courses for nursing round where I live but biological/biomedical studies. Would that be enough to top things up and get into a uni or would I be best to do science related A-Levels??

Thanks

You should DEFINITELY contact the admissions tutor for the course that you want to do with a summary of your current qualifications and ask their advice. Every uni/course has their own individual set of official requirements and unofficial preferences. In general I would have thought that a one year access course would be fine, but you don't want to wait until UCAS form time to find out that you don't meet their requirements.

Thanks muddleduck.

I've sent off for the application form for the access course but talking to the uni itself is a good idea - even though I wouldn't hold out much hope as it's an excellant uni with pretty high standards.

well done on getting the form done. Don't be too hard on yourself in terms of getting into a top uni - you don't know until you try. Your chances will be much better if you have a clear idea in advance of exactly what they are looking for.
Come back on here when you get to ucas form time and I'm sure you will get some helpful advice.
