Please help me with courses

I want to study something for when DD goes to school (she's only 8 months so i'm starting early)

I was thinking of doing distance learning as I think that would be easier than trying to get her into care (and tbh, I don't want her to go into childcare)

So I've picked 4 courses on UK Open learning and its come to £1035!! I cant afford this so....

I've picked GCSE Business Studies,
A level Maths
A level Eng Lit
A level Eng lang.

I don't have any ideas of what job I want when she goes to school but I figured these were general enough that they'd help me get a good job.

What do you all think? Also is there somewhere that's cheaper than £275 per course?

OU takes tescos vouchers?

Adult ed?

Try your local college? Some have a creche if you do P/T courses

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 21:18

I've looked at the local college and they don't do these courses. They don't even do A level Maths on a PT.

Whats OU? Open nUniversity? I didn't try that one.

Yes OU is open university

Where abouts are you?

moondog · 27/09/2008 21:20

Surely you could do those 4 GCSEs free?
They sound a good start btw.

Bear in mind that working under own steam takes huge amount of discipline, and is near impossible when a baby starts crawling.

Up to ypu of course but a few hours a week break from her and some aduult company may work wonders?

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 21:21

Wrexham, North Wales.

Are A levels undergraduate or postgraduate?

OP posts:

Moondog - they won't allow me to enrol on FT (free) so I have to go PT which I have to pay for and PT don't have those courses. Its a pain and feels like a vicious circle.

Not far from me then (Caernarfon)
NEWI is it?

KatyMac · 27/09/2008 21:22

Neither they are pre undergrad

I think access is what you need to look for (or at least that is what it used to be called)

There is Learning direct - I'm sure that is cheaper

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 21:23

I've tried NEWI and Yale and even North Shropshire College cos she could go to my mum's for an hour or so a week (on the way there) but they won't take me.

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 21:42

Ok i've just found that North Shropshire college do distance learning so....

I can only afford to do 1 course at a time. I need to know which ones you think are best and if you would swap any for anything else bearing in mind I'm going for a more general thing at the mo till I work out what I want to do with my life.

D look at Learn DIrect - I'm sure they are cheaper

I think you will have to ring them

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 21:51

I've looked through learn direct but they don't give you A level qualifications at the end. They just give you diplomas.

KatyMac · 27/09/2008 22:15

But level 3's are equivalent to A levels for further study

LuckySalem · 27/09/2008 22:18

I'll ring them tomorrow then cos i'm really confused! lol

Thanks Katy.

KatyMac · 27/09/2008 22:19

Cos I have done 2 level 3's and I have been told they count as A levels - (now you have me doubting)

SubRosa · 28/09/2008 10:08

I did my A Levels at a local 6th form college. They needed me to be CRB checked as most of the others were 17 at the start of the course, but it worked out well and fitted in with DD's term times. HTH.

JHKE · 28/09/2008 19:49

Level 3 courses are equivalent to A levels

LuckySalem · 28/09/2008 20:02

Thanks all.

According to my DP today employer's don't care about A levels anymore... is this true or has he gone nuts. Apparently I should only bother with A level's if i'm going to go to Uni.

If this is right does anyone know what employers are interested in?
