Don’t apply to geography at Nottingham university

Seriously.. my DS has had over a third of his lectures cancelled in first term. He’s no idea what he’s meant to be doing and nobody seems to care to help. Socially it’s brilliant, but academically I do not recommend!!!

It was the same when my dd was there in 2021! In her 3rd year, the staff staged a marking strike.
She insisted on staying there for postgrad, against my advice, and had a miserable experience.
The campus is lovely and socially it can be busy, but from an educational perspective, it's poor.

Can I ask those with yp at Notts on geography, how do/ did they find the experience? Has it affected employment opps? Can’t pull my YP out as would if it was a school as they’re just settled now and couldn’t contemplate starting somewhere new now.. so we’re in now (which imagine the unis know). Feel very helpless & generally ripped off!!!

There is always options to move in the first term...lots of movement usually.
If your ds has found another coirse, ge can absolutely move.

My daughter graduated in the summer with her Notts geography degree - she had no lectures for about half of her second year and only just got her dissertation marked in time...it's really poor. The students shouldn't be caught in the middle of the administrations woes.

@DifficultDilemmaMakingMeSad did she get a year in industry as part of the course & what is she doing now if you don’t mind me asking? I’m worried about future prospects if due to lack of content my DS only scrapes through.. he’s highly motivated but from what I’m hearing there’s literally no work being set to do!

I suppose this is an argument for looking beyond the beloved Russell Group, to universities where teaching is prioritised alongside research…

Why? They are just as likely to strike but for other conditions such as pay, pension and redundancies. But I guess it wouldn't be a MN thread if there wasn't the reverse snobbery element of slagging off RG unis.

DD is in her final year of an MFL degree at UoN. She's absolutely loved it there. To their credit, the MFL lecturers haven't been on strike yet and say they will do their best for the students. Let's see what happens next semester.

The distribution of Turing funding for the year abroad was a disgrace.

It didn’t affect my son’s employment opportunity. He graduated (after second year work unmarked in Geog) with a 2:1 two years ago and was the only candidate to secure a place on a competitive business grad scheme in a room full of business/management grads.

I’d be asking for some of my fees back.

This. I think students should get together and demand refunds. They are paying for a service which isn't being provided. The reason is that unis have cut teaching pay and job stability to the bone, while padding out managerial roles that are not required, on good, full time salaries. I support teaching staff for striking, but no way should students be getting into a lifetime of debt for an education that has not been provided.
