Any feedback on student life and maths at University of Sussex?

DS got offered his insurance, University of Sussex. It took ages for him to choose his insurance as he really wanted to go only to his firm, ideally.
However he does not intend (and I agree) to take a gap year so he will start uni now.
Does anyone have any feedback about Sussex? He is very sporty but he is not convinced. Not into politics at all, easy going, no drinker. Loves football and cricket. He will study maths and he is friendly and just all rounded.

Hi, OP -

I was drawn to your post because DH is a Russell Group maths professor, just retired. Lo those many years ago, Sussex was his Insurance, also. He did not go there but he still remembers really liking the place and he felt he would have been happy there.

At present the overall rating of Sussex Maths in the Complete University Guid 2027 the best of the league tables for capturing the variety of data that play into the undergraduate experience, is 33. That is middling, but the component scores are interesting.

Of great interest: student satisfaction is second only to St Andrews, the No 1 School of Maths. That tells you a lot about what students think. I think it is very impressive.

The other component scores let it down: entry standards, research quality and employability. Only entry standards are objectively a bit low. But that’s been the case for a long time. It didn’t bother DH and I don’t see it as an issue.

The research quality is more than adequate from an undergraduate perspective. It’s truly fine. The employability is a tad low compared to most Schools of Maths ranked above it. Not badly off. This means students should be especially proactive planning their careers, but that’s good advice for anyone. Mathematicians are very employable.

Best wishes to DS.

@poetryandwine many thanks for your comment. I had a look to the Guide and I agree with you on everything. Do you think I should look at the data for 2026 considering he is starting next month?

It couldn’t hurt. However the 2027 edition uses the most recent data, so it is really the most relevant.

Again, best wishes.
