This is useful for any new joiners.
DS is going to Newcastle but we live here (on the coast) so happy to answer any questions for people coming up here.

After visiting mine said she could only see herself living in Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow and Sheffield at a push ( we’d been to all those cities before except Newcastle) . Her choice has been based on location first then seeing if they had the course she wanted . Having visited for the first time i absolutely loved the city!

@Wehaditsogood DS is not doing medicine. He's the most squeamish person I know. He doing marketing.

hels71 · Yesterday 14:45

Hi!
DD is making her list of things she needs.
Apparently she will be fine for food because..Jaffa cakes are fruit so no chance of scurvy....hmmmmm

Been to the re use shop at the tip this morning and
came back with two plates, two side plates a pasta bowl, two cereal bowls, two hotel chocolat cups (he loves these for some reason but I want to keep mine!) and some cutlery for £5 total!

Then went to The Range and spent another £100 but did manage to get a lot of stuff.

I think he will get a grocery delivery once he's there which includes cleaning products as they're cheapest from the supermarket and won't have to lug them in the car.

My tiny Skoda citigo is not know to know what's going on when it's moving day 😬

In terms of pots DS is going to get our old ones. I have already bought new ones for ourselves over the course of the past year. It is partly due to DS's attempts at cooking that we needed new pots anyway.

Several of DS's close friends will go to the Newcastle University medical school. It will be a lovely group. @bluefineliner @gingercat02 @postitnot

DS has been allocated his last and most expensive choice of accommodation at York. It is apparently the most boisterous place. He, of course, wanted a quiet place and wanted to give up rugby. We shall see.
@WaxMeltsMelting Are you pleased with your accommodation?

DS is so happy that he can continue Econ that he is now planning his Masters. He doesn't care a jot about his A-levels and plans to reinvent himself. 😍
I hope all our YP can get over their disappointments and come out stronger ⚘️

He's got Derwent- he's not loud and sporty at all but I'm sure he'll find his tribe!

Checking in. DS is off to Sussex. His best mate is going too and they've managed to get into the same flat. He's also in several group chats already too so I think he'll have the social side sorted!
We did an IKEA trip last weekend for basics and need to get bedding now that accommodation is confirmed and we know the bed size. Then I'm going to step back and let DS work out for himself what else he might want/need. It's tricky as when I'm anxious about a change, planning everything to the nth degree is one of my coping strategies but I know that I need to let DS take the lead here and he's more than capable of it.

postitnot · Yesterday 15:00

@gingercat02 DD is doing economics, so in the Business school too (is marketing there?)

She has found a laundry basket she likes... from Oliver Bonas! Hmm I think not, unless she wants to buy it herself.

Honestly, shd knows loads going to Newcastle! Very popular choice

I am also starting to worry about logistics as we don't have a car! I think I am going to have to hire one. DS assumed we were going by train but I'm not sure that's going to be possible!!

Edited

I always went by train - on my own!

we are flying and then hiring a car

I am no longer able to drive due to my eyesight and df was going to drive her but had to have eye surgery last week and can't drive atm. We may get the train but there is no direct train to St Andrews and it will take about 7 hours.

Flying is easier ? And also easier with luggage

Hello all. We had an emotional Thursday as DC missed their grades for Cambridge (needed 2 A stars and an A, in their three sciences). They still got great grades and will be headed to York for an Msci in Psychology. They're getting more excited now and are enthusiastically planning.

They're happy with college allocation as it's right next to the Psychology department. It's also catered, so less kitchen stuff needed.

Yes I realised I need to let him take the lead a bit also, so I have a list and shared links for various things which he approved. It's difficult when you want to ensure they have the right things. I'm just getting the same frying pan and stainless steel main pan that we have at home, neither of which were expensive, so I know he'll be happy with those.

Had a bit of a low point last night as reality hit home that he will be gone in September and we will have empty nest syndrome. Throwing myself into organising helped but it's not quite the same as organising something else - ie it's organising something for them leaving!

We got the bedding a few weeks back as his accommodation has extra long beds and it was hard to find things to fit. They needed 4 weeks notice. He asked me to start getting things a few weeks back so I just ordered the bedding. Duvet and pillows can go from here though.

Cutlery and chopping knife were done last week and plates and bowls were done ages ago as I had a voucher that was about to run out so used it for those.

Have already put together a little tin of "useful things". And have a mini first aid kit which will add the odd thing to.

@Desperatelyseekinglazysusan the microwave rice cooker sounds like a really good idea. So far I have just found a 2 litre microwave bowl/jug which could double as something to tip pasta in after cooked or as a general bowl or whatever. But still not be a heavy bulky thing to transport.

Frying pan was from Lakeland simple range. It's still non stick coating but free from the nasties. And we have one and it seems fine. Pan is just a stainless steel one 20cm. Big enough/tall enough to hold enough water for boiling pasta or rice without boiling the pan dry, not too big to cook a meal for one, but a good size for cooking enough for 2 or 3 meals. And it's one he's used to using.

Other than that have a space saving cheese grater, a y potato peeler (not sure if that's needed or not!). Decided against a tin opener as most tins are ring pull anyway. He can always buy one when there if needed. And just 3 cooking utensils. Wooden spoon from here as we have a few. Will probably get salt and pepper grinder. Small chopping board and collapsible space saving collander and an oven tray.

The bedding and suitcase will fill the car and as they have to bring everything back at some point, decided to go for lightweight space saving things.

Haven't bought some yet though, they are just in a basket online so will check out the microwave rice cooker! Maybe it will double up for other things as well.

Hello! DS off to Exeter to do Geography Bsc.
Just picked up some bath sheets in Tesco with clubcard for £2.80 each which seemed a bargain - navy, look like they will do the job! Sure he will be thrilled…

Yes Marketing and Business, in the business school.

Thank you for this thread @ComingInByAnsible. Great to see lots from the Year13 thread joining as well as others too! DC will be going to Warwick to study History. Not bought anything yet and seeing all the posts is making me think we need to start thinking about it soon!

My husband took everything on three trains, including stereo separates in three suitcases. He dragged his poor mum along to help.
So when he makes noise about our son taking too much, I just remind him of this and he has no leverage 🤣

Wehaditsogood · Yesterday 16:03

@postitnot Newcastle Business School is fantastic.
@gingercat02 I know some people in the Marketing department. They are really good teachers.
Hope your DCs will like it.

I wonder if they find out on advance who they will share halls with. Does that ever happen? That would make it easier as I imagine the kitchens will be full of pots and pans etc otherwise!

Oh yes. Like I said, DS already knows his mate will be in his flat and he knows the names of the others...says he's been checking out their Instas! I don't know if they are at the point or will ever get to the point of planning their stuff though!

Roundaboot · Yesterday 16:15

Someone posted about sharp knives on another thread. Because of the age restrictions, this is something they'll find difficult to buy for themselves and so definitely something parents need to provide..

Why is that? They’re all over 18 so as long as they can show ID I wouldn’t anticipate any issues

Great idea! I had completely forgotten about towels! But I think he can take some from home. And yes loves his salt and pepper grinders!

I added anti histamines to the list of meds as well. Just in case needed. Hadn't got to grips with cleaning things yet other than washing up liquid and sponge scourer. I bought tea towels and oven glove set with nectar points. Thermometer is a good idea - we have a spare I can put in the small first aid kit.

Kitchen utensils I just have: Fish slice (called a slotted turner these days I think), and large spoon (both silicone). And a wooden spoon. As that is mainly what I use!

Sieve could do as a colander I guess. I got a collapsible space saving colander instead.

manywanderings · Yesterday 16:57

And laundry hamper - seen a bag with handles on amazon - easy to carry to the launderette and folds flat. Reckon most kitchen items can be packed in that for transporting!

Also have a tin of small items like ear plugs, door stop, sellotape etc

Great to see so many joining the thread!

I saw this Reddit thread with a link to a generic packing list made by a current Warwick student that YP can download and modify/update (hopefully the link works):
