Cardiff Uni open day

We are attending this tomorrow. Struggling to find info on best parking as they’d prefer people to use public transport. Fine, but that would cost us £400 so we’ll drive for £50. Any tips on car parks that we should head for that are closest to the main campus?

It’s really hard to park near the uni. Loads of residential roads and parking restrictions. I’d aim for the far side away from the city centre and walk in from near the river

Its not far from town if you dont mind a small walk (20 min max), you can park outside the museum, john lewis, st davids 2 all have lots parking

baublegirl353 · 26/06/2026 17:55

Thank you. Any particular car parks near the river? Don’t mind a walk but will adjust arrival time accordingly

Have you looked at the open day information? There are some shuttle buses from some stations afaik.

My kid went to Cardiff open day last year and was chronically under prepared so do read all the information they’ve sent out. It’s big and busy and stressful!

I would park near the Museum/Alexandra Gardens. There’s Council pay and display parking all along King Edward VII Avenue and Museum Avenue which will put you very close to the university. If you end up parking in the city centre you can either walk or catch a train from Cardiff Central to Cathays.

dahliadiva · 26/06/2026 18:12

Use the park and ride. We went last year and did this. It was absolutely fine, no problems at all

Starhaf · 26/06/2026 18:19

I would aim for the museum. Plenty of parking in that area which that yo cant miss & is very close to the main uni buildings. Otherwise drive close to Cardiff, pick up a train and get off either at Cardiff Queen Street & walk through the main shopping streets to the uni (about 15 mins walk) or take the train to Cathays station which is practically at the uni itself so barely any walking needed.

Bit of a detour but you should look into subject cuts at Cardiff. Not long ago on here there's been discussion about how they have cut all MFL and Ancient History plus others, sometimes while there's been students already on those courses.

baublegirl353 · 26/06/2026 19:52

Thanks all, will look into all of those. He wants to study law with politics, so not one of those courses

Near the museum is best. Alexandra gardens.
Council have binned the park and ride which is a disgrace.
Unless the uni runs its own.
The original one now serves only the hospital, but they want rid of that also.

VividDeer · 26/06/2026 20:07

If you are worried about traffic get train to Cathays from radyr or taffs well.

These will be rammed before you get there unless you're planning on arriving at 5 am.

  1. Look on JustPark now and get what you can, whatever the price, or else you'll be driving around for ages looking, unsuccessfully.
  2. There's a Novotel on Schooner Way that has an enormous parking lot, and you don't have to be staying there to park - you can pay on the day at reception. Depending on what time you're arriving you might be out of luck. You may be able to book online, unsure, check. It's a bit of a walk but unless you're used to/in need of a two minute walk to the Uni, you'll be fine.
  3. Go to the Bay. Early. Park. Get an Uber/Dragon cab.
  4. Or do what Vivid said and get the train in a few stops.

Don't attempt to park on residential streets even if there's space. It's permit controlled. They will catch you. They will enforce it. Good luck, Cardiff is gorgeous and friendly, and the Uni is excellent. If you YP goes there be prepared for them to never want to leave.

I’d say park at Radyr station for free and get the train in to Cathays (trains at least every 15 mins, sometimes more), takes about 8 minutes and you’re right by the majority of the uni buildings. Other option is llandaf station which is only a 5 min drive from junction 32 of the m4 but is smaller car park so might not have parking if you’re later.

edited to add you can tap on and tap off so really easy

This is a good idea, or taffs well which is v easy from motorway junction but smaller car park than Radyr. If driving right in, The pay and display round the museum and Alexandria gardens is closest, but I don't know if this means it gets full on open days. North road pay and display also pretty close, or Dumfries place ncp.

This. There's usually plenty of on-street parking around the uni, especially at the Colum Road end. If not, the car parks along North Road (near the Welsh College of Music and Drama) are another option. Just make sure you pay at the machines.
