Dyslexia assessment and diagnosis- is it worth it?

DS will be going into second year of an engineering degree in September. He excelled at the practical aspect of year 1 and most of the maths and physics exams but didn’t do as well in the longer written assessments. He is pretty sure he is dyslexic but manages by playing to his strengths.

Would an official diagnosis benefit him? Would course leaders care? Would future employers be sympathetic or could it put them off?

Or does he just need to continue to play to his strengths but also know he’ll need to take more time to improve his written work if he doesn’t want it to pull his overall grade down?

My dd is in 2nd year and struggled with exams - she has been now diagnosed with dyslexia

She now has things in place to help - but we are looking at it as the diagnosis/recognition will help her when it comes to reasonable adjustments when she gets work.

I work as a Study Skills Tutor for uni students with dyslexia. Dyslexic students receive extra time in exams if needed, use of ICT and other supports and possible extra funding for things such as proofreading.

I know several of my past students wouldn’t have a degree without their support despite being highly intelligent individuals. Can tell me everything they want to write down verbally, hold all the knowledge and analytical skills but cannot get it down on paper.

100% worth it. And also for adjustments in employment.
