Do contextual offers still apply after a gap year with grades in hand?

Hi,

DC Year 12 doesn’t know what they want to do or where they want to go for Uni. Planning to do a gap year after Year 13 to travel and apply for next steps, whatever they might be. This is fine by us.

If they decide University is what they want to do, would contextual offers still apply with grades already in hand? For example, the school DC attends is on Bristol’s aspiring school list but if they’ve already left the school would that still be taken into consideration?

All insights into admissions for people who already have their A level grades welcome.
Thanks.

Hi, OP -

Generally, yes. Contextual data is about background and educational circumstances. A gap year doesn’t change those.

If the contextual data is tied to personal data (family background, post code), I can’t think what special thing an applicant would need to do. If it is tied to the school or college, just make sure the UCAS form is filled in perfectly and double check with the sixth form to be extra thorough.

There may be some universities that don’t allow this but I think it would be unusual. To be sure, DC could email admissions teams and ask. That’s more convenient for them than ringing, and also gives DC a written record of the hopefully positive reply.

fellow SW person here - as an example ,for Exeter uni the wording for the schools list says "attending" but i would presume as they went there it might still apply, if in doubt check with uni admissions ( there is always potential for a school to move off the list, or for criteria to change ). However i have just checked our school for Bristol uni schools eligibility, and it was on the list for 2025 cycle but not on the list for 2026 cycle !

Yes - if you look on Bristol’s “contextual offers”
page, it says:

“You will be eligible for a contextual offer if you apply from an aspiring state school or college. We consider a school or college to be aspiring if it has low average attainment and progression to higher education statistics.
If you are currently attending school or college and applying for 2026 university entry, you must apply through a school or college listed below to be eligible.Information for 2027 entry will be available in June 2026.
Please note: these lists apply specifically to 2026 entry.”
-then it links the lists.

Then it says:

“If you have finished school or college, you must have attended a school or college on one of the 2025 lists for the 2024/25 academic year to be eligible.“
-and it lists the 2024/5 schools.

So as long as it was on the list for the appropriate time period it looks like it’s ok. Probably a good idea to check with them though to get clarification.

Thanks all, that’s good news. Will get DC to check directly. It certainly feels more straightforward if DC were to apply with predicted grades and defer but as a 16 year they just don’t know what they want to study or where yet.

It also feels slightly weird that they will apply through their school even though they will have left.
