Just on the “northerners” are much less likely to leave their flat caps and whippets nonsense.

Taking the “North”, in terms of England, as the North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber regions, and looking at the most recent published HESA data in terms of full time undergrads and home domicile.

DCs from London

  • 2.7% attend a Uni in the North East, in contrast 2% of DCs from the North East are at a London Uni. A small difference, but this one slightly favours London DCs.
  • 3.2% attend a uni in Yorkshire and the Humber. The exact same percentage, 3.2% of DCs from Yorkshire and Humber attend a London Uni.
  • 3.3% attend a Uni in the North West, In contrast 3.5% of DCs from the North West attend a Uni in London.

in absolute terms there are more full time undergrads from London than those three northern regions combined. Given the size of London plus socio-economic factors and the investment in London schools this is no great surprise.

However in terms of percentage of the cohort the differences are minimal, and go both ways as shown by the North West percentage

Given the OPs post was about Exeter, just taking undergrads at Exeter who’s home is in England.

32% come from the South East, 24.2% from the South West, 16.5% from London.

As far as the South East goes

  • 1150 from Surrey,
  • 1050 from Hampshire
  • 650 from Kent

All the bigger LAs population wise so not a great surprise.

70% of students at Exeter aren't from independent schools.Thats still a large majority. It takes a lot of students from Devon and Cornwall - there is an excellent Exeter Scholars pathway for local students.
Ds is graduating from Exeter in July. He has loved his time there and the University has been amazing. He had approx 25 contact hours and a further 10-15hrs of group work (Econ) so I felt he got value for money!
He has a graduate job lined up after the summer.
He did feel unsupported in his hunt for a year in Industry and didnt manage to secure one, though it is a distant memory now as he'll be earning a year earlier.

Also two kids at Exeter - both kids friendship groups are mostly kids from state schools. There are a range of kids at exeter, but if you walk around campus I think what you see is a lot of kids who didn't necessarily go to private school, but whose parents could have afforded to send them to private school if they wanted to, so those kids are mostly well dressed and look like they might have been to private school.

Exeter also seems to be the insurance choice for kids who don't get into Durham and a lot of those kids applying for Durham went to private schools.

It is a great uni although accommodation costs are eye watering at 2nd year level.
