Summer Camp/ Volunteering help

Hi all,

My DS was keen to do Camp Canada this year, but due to illness he missed an assessment in December, which he needs to complete on campus between late June & 7th August, so he would need to be home by 5th August latest. This appears to mean Camp will be just not possible this year.

It's disappointing, but he'll apply for next year.

He's looking for other volunteering opportunities abroad (or even UK & Ireland) for at least a month. He's sporty & full of fun, but is ND so needs help with getting this in place - thus my post!

It doesn't need to be sport focused, he's very flexible. But it can't cost an arm & a leg. We're fine with £1000ish plus travel.

Any recommendations are hugely appreciated.

Thanks 🙏

Just checking, is it one assessment, on a date tbc, or a longer period he couldn't work / volunteer ?

As, he could probably get a paid job and secure that one day off if he wanted to ? There are lots of Summer holiday jobs that are run locally or such as Kings Camps or PGL or Outward Bound or camps to do with specific sports.

Companies like Venture Abroad might have vacancies, but it would be more difficult to then get home for his assessment.

Would also hold him in good stead to apply for a North American Camp next year.

Or there are loads of organisations like PHAB or SENSE that are always looking for Volunteers to support their Summer Holidays for people with additional needs. Those are just two off the top of my head, but lots of Charities do similar.

Summer Camp Sports Coaching & Childcare Jobs - Kings Camps

Work for Kings Camps and deliver summer sports camps for children across the UK! Great career opportunities for teachers and students in childcare and sport.

Does he definitely want to volunteer? If not he could try to get a job with Eurocamp or a similar organisation.

That's brilliant information, thank you. It's one assessment day. The assessment will be set very late June & stays open until August 7th. It's a lab type assessment where he needs to book a day of his choosing with the university. It's a total pest. If it was early June he could still go to camp, or later in August.

I looked at a few charity ones, but they seem to be only one week at a time, & he'd be better being away for at least a month to get into it.

I'll look at all your recommendations. Thank you so much.

It can be whatever. I thought Eurocamp etc would want him for after August.

Paid position would be great, but he'd need to be home for this annoying assessment.

He's passing the year with As (1st year) so it's all very annoying!

My DD is going back to Super Camps this summer (UK-based), it is paid fairly well and the dates are quite flexible. You don't need a particular sport or skill. Worth investigating as it is great experience too.

I'll definitely look into this, I haven't heard of them. Thanks so much.

The Mighty Roar have good reviews - not sports related but volunteers stuff, lots in animal care, conservation etc but other things too. All over the world.

Another glowing recommendation for the Mighty Roar. DD has volunteered in their teaching/childcare projects several times.
