Law Firm Spring Vacation Schemes

My niece (in final year uni) was telling me about a law firm's Vacation Scheme, which she has a place on for 1 week. She said that the company usually offer half of the scheme's students a training contract, so she is viewing it as an extended interview. I don't know much about law entry routes, but it has sparked my curiosity. If you have experience of these schemes, do they have the air of an assessment centre? What sort of tasks and activities will the candidates be involved in? Are the candidates likely to be sharp elbowed towards each other?

She is entirely correct that it's an extended interview. Every single person she comes into contact may feed into her evaluation and she can be sure that if she comes across poorly to them, she will, so she needs to be enthusiastic, friendly, diligent and proactive.

The students themselves are usually pretty nice towards each other, they will have various talks, exercises and socials, as well as spending a bit of time in various departments.

Thanks. I know I'm biased, but she is all of those things, so fingers crossed she will be successful.

If it is a one week one she will likely be in one department only. Rather than being like an assessment centre which she will already have done (except for a few firms) she will be given the type of work a trainee might get.

It is an extended interview so very good luck to her.
