Can university support help student seek ADHD diagnosis or via GP?

Hello. Son is coming to the end of the first year of a tough stem course. He's set to pass the year and doing well academically but he's been wondering if he may have ADHD for various reasons. I won't go into those reasons here because I'm not looking for Mumsnet to diagnose him. Suffice to say I think he has good reason to look into it at least.

Can uni help with him seeking a diagnosis or does he have to go to the GP? He has only just registered with a uni GP so has been told to wait 10 days before making an appt unless it's urgent. Just wondering if student support services are another route. Thanks

I don't know if it's the case everywhere but they do at the one ds is at and he is doing exactly that - exploring the possibility of an ADHD diagnosis. Contact the disability advisory service they will have and see what they say.

My dd saw her Student Support Services around the same time in her university career, and got what they called an "educational diagnosis" of ADHD (and also dyslexia which was a surprise). This meant they could offer her tools - software, strategies, and support from a study skills tutor - but not prescribe medication. Unfortunately she couldn't really get it together to access or utilise those tools successfully until a couple of years later when she did get medicated. But the Support Services were really helpful and the support they offered might be more useful to someone else.

And even if he got a diagnosis elsewhere, he would still want the university to know to be able to put support in place, so yes, I would definitely recommend the student support services.

That's good to know, thanks. I'll suggest he contacts them
