George Mason University

Hello. My son is planning to apply for a bachelor’s degree in the U.S., and George Mason University is currently our top choice. We are trying to understand the real cost of studying there, since different sources show quite different numbers. Specifically, we’d like to know the approximate yearly expenses for an international student, including tuition, housing, and daily living. We would also appreciate any practical advice from people familiar with the admissions process or student life at this university.

In general, studying in the U.S. is quite expensive, and George Mason is considered a mid-range option in terms of cost. The main expenses are tuition and housing, but you should also consider insurance, food, and personal spending. On average, families plan around $50,000–60,000 per year. The good news is that with strong grades and English skills, students can sometimes qualify for scholarships or financial aid.

For international students at George Mason University, tuition is roughly around $38,000–40,000 per year for undergraduate programs. Housing and food usually add about $15,000–16,000 annually, depending on whether the student lives on campus or off campus. In addition, you should budget for books, insurance, transportation, and personal expenses, which can add another $4,000–6,000 per year. So in total, most families should realistically expect about $55,000–60,000 annually. More details about programs and admission can be found here: infostudyhub.com/george-mason-university . It’s also worth noting that some students receive scholarships, which can partially reduce the total cost, but they are competitive and not guaranteed.

I think you're better talking to the specific university itself in terms of costs. They'll have a good Admissions website and office, and will be set up for international students. If they're not, avoid.

Just some things to think about - or for your son to think about:

  • Why George Mason?
  • does he intend to return to the UK to work? This is important for him to think about, because ... (see below)
  • How visible is GMU in the sector/profession he intends to enter?
  • If he does plan to return to work in the UK, how will he develop networks and mentorship in the UK to help him secure employment/start a career?
  • Does he basically want to emigrate to the US? What are the long-term plans in this respect?
  • How will he go about the extensive application process? Unlike the UK for competitive schools in the US extra-curricular and community service work makes a difference.

I'm always intrigued by these posts of teenagers fixed on studying in the US. I'm not sure they know enough about it - maybe they've watched too many teen college movies? I don't know ...

It's far more expensive to study in the US in all sorts of ways (add in high visa fees). Depending on his area/discipline, he might be better off choosing as high a ranked university in his area in the UK, which offers a year abroad at a choice of excellent US universities. I know at my place, we offer a carefully chosen range of years abroad - chosen with a view to the excellence of their programmes in specific areas, and frankly, places where our students wouldn't necessarily have secured a 4 year place.
