Hello,

Anyone whose children went from UK secondary to university in France/Belgium/Luxembourg/Switzerland?

How did you do it basically.
Is a good level in French mandatory?

Thank you

In my case, it’s about the cost of UK education and the impact of AI. I don’t want my children to start their adult lives burdened with debt that may not even lead to a stable career. They’ll have to make their decisions in the next couple of years, yet we still don’t fully understand how AI will reshape the job market. It all feels a bit overwhelming.

I can see this too and imagine many will be doing the same. Is there a website to help UK students see the options abroad?

@Eumaybe What debt? No job, no debt. Repayments are based on earnings.

A degree from abroad will cost you plenty anyway with no guarantee of anything. Plus if it’s not from a top university, what’s it worth? Friend’s DC has a double masters from Maastricht but who cared? No employer for a year. It’s no guarantee of anything but you will pay a lot up front.

You’ll be taking on the debt though. No loans for fees or maintenance so unless you have a ton of cash squirreled away (in which case why not use to pay their UK fees and maintenance?) it’s not really an option.

If you’re worried about AI, how does having a degree from the EU mitigate that? And why make your kids future life harder by getting them a degree from (probably) an academically weaker uni, and one that employers don’t understand the grades of.

Fees are way lower in parts of Europe. Like, literally ten times lower. Switzerland is a good bet, it has loads of programmes in English and plenty of unis high in the global rankings.

OhDear111 · 27/02/2026 09:01

@ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously And the cost of living in Switzerland? Which world class unis teach a full programme in English? DD went to Geneva. Taught in French.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 27/02/2026 12:09

Lots of courses in English in Geneva. Cost of living is comparable to other major world cities like London and Paris (and if you have EU citizenship, living in neighbouring France is a lot cheaper), plus any casual work you pick up is much better paid than comparable casual work in the UK. There are also affordable housing schemes for students. That said, obviously one of the pros of studying abroad is improving foreign language skills, which is not to be sneezed at.
