DD2 has just firmed her KCL offer. Am a little terrified at the thought and cost of London (we are from a rural/suburban area). Any others KCL/London bound?

Check if KCL offer any bursaries or other financial support. There are lots of part time jobs students can pick up to help with costs.

MrsBeltane · 12/02/2026 18:52

DD is in studying in London. We give her £1000 a month to pay her rent and top-up the maintenance loan
It is outrageously expensive.

Dearover · 12/02/2026 18:58

KCL usually give an automatic bursary to anyone who receives a full maintenence loan if they give permission for their details to be shared between the SLC and KCL

greencheetah · 12/02/2026 19:08

Plenty of halls available at reasonable rates at KCL.

I earn too much for any bursaries. She's looking at scholarships and plans to work but is ND and very conscientious so am worried will be too much for her.

Yep that's kinda what I'm seeing and expecting.

I guess it depends what you consider reasonable the very cheapest ones we have found are £300/week but most are £350 plus. Do you consider that reasonable? On a 40 week contract thats £14k a year just on accomodation

greencheetah · 12/02/2026 19:33

DS paid £300 ish inc utilities. I just checked and similar available including cheaper. That’s £12k over forty weeks. I think you will struggle to find anything cheaper.

Even a room in a flat share would be that once you factor in the bills.

I know we won't get cheaper. That's the cheapest really. But distance and rooms make a difference with ND child with anxiety. I wasn't really asking about finding cheaper just sharing my worry about how expensive it is and how much it seems to have got since DD1 graduated 2 years ago (Brighton so also quite expensive). And also interested in others experience of DC at uni in London.

Curious how long ago that was as it really seems to have jumped up in price since DD2 graduated just 2 years ago.

My DC is likely to firm KCL. Really wanted LSE but no response so far. We always knew London was the preferred destination so have been saving for the accommodation costs. KCL cheapest rates about 265/week but most seem to be around 365/week

PinterandPirandello · 12/02/2026 21:24

Have they applied to Imperial? They offer bursaries but also have very reasonably priced student halls (admittedly in N Acton) which are all en-suite and very sociable. Approx £6.8K for 38 weeks which was cheaper than places like Warwick, Bath etc for the same standard.

No kings was their only London one and 2nd choice (cambridge rejected post interview). She's firmed Kings.

Curious choice. Did she have other options?

Curious how? She absolutely loves RE/philosophy/ethics, is fascinated by religion and people. Wants to work in government/policy (or be an academic) i guess i know her well so its the absolute perfect subject for her 😊 No idea where she comes from being a STEM/medic girl myself but shes humanities through and through. She didn't want any other options that was her choice and had a Cambridge interview and 4 excellent uni offers. We all do different things

I'm not commenting on the choice of course, sorry, but on the choice of university. King's humanities are a bit dodgy.

BurnoutGP · 13/02/2026 13:11

Ah I see. KCL ranks highly for humanities (interestingly on another thread they were saying it was rubbish for eng so ?). Currently top 10 for theology.
She had her heart set on Cambridge and KCL was her 2nd choice. Didn't want durham. Also had offers for edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol. But KCL is what she wants and I can only support her. She has done lots of research 😬

KCL is great for humanities! Scores much better than Durham.

I hope they enjoy themselves. And it doesn’t completely bankrupt you!! 💐

You’ve just read that this ND teen has firmed her offer to read theology at KCL, and your comment (not even a knee-jerk one, you came back with it) is that King’s is a bit “dodgy” for humanities? I’m so surprised by the unnecessarily meanness and irrelevance of this comment I’m compelled to ask why you made this. Are you a King’s reject yourself? Have you failed in your own professional life? Has your child disappointed you? Do you have some sort of superiority or inferiority complex?

OhDear111 · 13/02/2026 14:11

@canklesmctacotits The poster in question has a different take on HE. No idea about how MFL degrees work in the uk for example. Just a bit odd.

Kings will be fine. DDs friend did undergrad and masters there - speaks 4 MFLs. Just be aware government policy jobs are like hens teeth. This DD has a stonking cv but government policy eluded her despite the apparently sought after war studies masters, parliamentary intern and editor of the Kings Think Tank. Go for it - but it’s hard.

There are several Kings halls at under £300 a week but prices, overall, are high.

Id not confirm Kings before hearing from LSE. It’s only mid February! Very early to give up.

I have a DC currently at a London university who comes into contact with a lot of King's humanities students and the situation is pretty worrying. I don't know in any detail about theology but other humanities subjects are poorly taught and assessed. Standards are not high.

Students Accuse King’s of ‘Devaluing Degrees’ in Assessment Shake-Up

university in London is expensive, no getting away from it. But it’s a wonderful experience, Strand Campus is a fantastic location. As with all universities, most people have a great time and some people don’t. There is nothing “dodgy” about it
