‘First sit’?

Our son is in his last year and due to having a bad dose of the flu last month he had to ask for extensions for 2 assignments which he was given. He submitted one but wanted another day past the extension to complete it and was told that was fine. He was then told a few hours later that due to the university firewall he wouldn’t be able to submit his assignment later and he emailed his tutor about it. He has now been told that he needs to do the assignment all over again in August in something called a ‘first sit’ which means he won’t be able to graduate in July with his friends. This seems unreasonable in our opinion especially as he has never asked for extensions before or failed anything etc. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

What is he hoping to do when he graduates?
You can't get a 1 day extension on a lot of things in the world of employment. A surgeon can't stop in the middle of brain operation and say " oh I'm feeling a bit flu-headed, I'll come back tomorrow" same with lesser jobs in law, education, banking etc etc.
Executive function is important whatever you do.

@FriendsinNameonly he is doing journalism and I think it’s a bit unreasonable to say that. He’s not stupid and this is just unfortunate. I am a lawyer myself and am only too aware of deadlines in my work

Ok so one of my siblings is a senior UK journalist and has been for 15 yrs since graduating from Cambridge. It is one of the most deadline centered jobs out there. You can't not deliver your copy for the print / upload deadline or you're essentially failing at your job and will be let go.

@FriendsinNameonly absolutely get your point. And this is a lesson for our son to learn! However we all make mistakes and I was just looking for any advice/similar experiences on here. I am in no way excusing the situation or expecting special treatment. Considering I sat my finals two months after my mum died I think I would know what extenuating circumstances are and am well aware this doesn’t fall into that category
