Anyone go on Saturday?
Particularly for Law.
How did you find it.

Not for law but DH and DS went yesterday for Natural Sciences. I think the experience was slightly marred by it being the first offer holder day - the organisation was a bit chaotic (had been told to register at the wrong place, no one seemed to know where the group should be etc), plus DH said the student helpers on campus were a bit clueless... But overall very impressed with the uni and course, DH said it was the best accommodation he had seen, and DS is likely to firm. I went to the open day with DS, which was very slick, so I think yesterday's experience was just first-day issues that will hopefully be ironed out for future dates.

Took DH a while to get his head around the higgly-piggly design of the campus (as in it's a huge green campus, but all buildings are squished in on top of each other) but he then read about the architects' masterplan and learned it was intentionally a 'fruit salad of functions' and that satisfied him...DS of course completely oblivious, just pleased to see a Greggs store.

How did you find it?

DD had an offer for Nat Sci 2 years ago and we found it really interesting.
She had a slightly unusual path and the HOD had been really helpful and given her his email previously. He and his PA remembered her at the offer holders day and came to speak to her. Everyone was so nice
I really wanted her to go there, I really felt it would suit her and they gave her a really low offer but she chose somewhere else

@legotoe
We found it very good.
There were plenty of helpers for Law, although the lad who showed us to the first talk, from the meet point, either wasn't studying Law or hadn't been to any lectures as it was only 20 meters away and the lecture theatre used for the first years!
There were plenty on the ball though.
Nice that they put on some food (don't know if that is usual or not, as it's the first one).
Some repetition but to be expected as some don't go to the open days.

Law seems to have good career support. Mediation clinic to learn skills, working with a software company to develop an AI client meeting avatar to practice client meetings and getting feedback on speech speed, filler words, question types, etc.

Campus is a bit warren like, but students will get to know shortcuts down alleys and through buildings.

Accom is good, even the cheaper ones are half decent. Townhouses stairs are very creaky though!

Hi, we were there for law with my dd on Saturday. We really liked it..it felt very supportive, lots of opportunities and friendly atmosphere. It’s our dd’s insurance choice but we would all be very happy if she went there. She was also delighted there was a Greggs

Both of mine are there, one doing law. It’s a really good course and taught well with a good variety of assessment methods.

one DC switched from Exeter as a first choice as a result of the offer holder day at Lancaster which for his subject (not law) was fantastic,

The offer holder day for law was a bit flat IMO and I think they must have had someone moaning previously that there was nothing about learning support for kids with disabilities because there was way too much time spent on that. Hopefully the balance was better this year.

Lancaster as a university in general is just fantastic. Both of mine have had an amazing and very sociable experience. Campus can seem a bit cold and wet at this time of year on a Saturday morning but when it’s full of students it’s buzzing and it really is like a village with literally everything they could want on campus -multiple bars, cinema, loads of places to eat, great sports centre, multiple supermarkets, Greggs, subway, Chinese etc

It’s also well worth joining the Lancaster university parents Facebook group. So much information on there.

Yes - there for earth and environmental sciences on Saturday. So impressed by the tutors. Seemed very hands on. Campus attractive and liked the town. Still to see Exeter and Nottingham but wonder if this might be a more supportive, less anonymous environment? Anyway my ds really liked it.

The collegiate system means it is really supportive and very easy to get involved in things. It's also very easy to get to know people because lots of college events take place where you are mixing with the same people. There are university wide events too of course and everyone goes to the sugarhouse which is the university owned nightclub in town and is very safe because its students only.

I went there many years ago its a fantastic uni and town very friendly. Looking forward to the 50 year anniversary event at Grizedale on March- we left in 1996!

legotoe · 05/02/2026 18:26

Well, DS has since firmed so hopefully will be going there in September. I joined the Facebook group mentioned above a while back - agree it's a great resource of info and it has been very helpful in reassuring me it's a fantastic uni.

Aw I went to Lancaster over a decade ago. I had the best time and met my husband on day 1. It’s a great university.
