Affording uni- I'm struggling with how?

My dd has applied for uni and I think we can just manage it. University Fees, loans and ideally as she's applied to Scotland there is extra money. Plus maintenance loan.
Unfortunately I earn £60k but am sole earner my dh is disabled. But we'll get mim loan i believe.
We live paycheck to paycheck as we live in SE and rent.
She will be able to get a disabled loan/bursery. And she does get PIP.
But it's going to be so hard.
How do you do it?

I wouldn’t deliberately encourage shit food - they will manage that themselves. Teach her to make a decent omelette/tomato sauce/cheese sauce instead.

At a lot of unis there are options like library work which would be potentially more sustainable maybe? Also yy to tutoring. There should be advice on work options via the uni’s disability support service, maybe she could ring them ahead of time?

Does this help at all? It does seem that some disabled students do qualify for additional funds.

As I understand it tho DSA is not a payment in cash; it’s money available for adaptations. For example if someone needed specific software to be able to access their learning.

I am also interested to know what uni and course is offering all this money tbh. The way your posts read @Boxingshibes make it sound as tho all Scottish unis offer large grants, or offer them to all disabled students. I've not heard that before so is it a specific course where the offer is made?

Boxingshibes · 14/01/2026 20:46

@clary The money is a bursery to attend the uni £2k ( only for 1st year) , grade attainment £3k and being from England £3k.
We attended an open day and were informed of this by the finance person.
I understand disability grants are not cash but can be used to get a new laptop and phone. She will also need speech to text software when she gets tired.

So does this uni pay every English student £3k – or is it just those who take this specific course? I’m surprised more students are not doing this tbh.

I am not doubting what you say (I see it sounds as tho I am) – I know of an English student who got a £1k bursary from their Scottish uni – but this is such a lot more money. Anyway if it's bc of her disability all more power to her. Hope she does well.

Is she doing a course that willl almost certainly guarantee a job….nursing, medicine, teaching? If not then maybe she needs to reconsider her options.

PurpleCyclamen · 14/01/2026 21:33

Very few parents can afford to make up the fees. My children, and the majority of their friends, took a gap year and saved then had part time jobs at uni.

Boxingshibes · 14/01/2026 21:57

@Gall10 it's a medical science course. There is a career in medicine/police/ pharmaceuticals after.

My DS received money towards a laptop, software and help with printing costs.

One other thing to check, is check with your local parish council and see if there are any educational bursaries floating about - most round here seem to have one or two historic schemes set up. You can apply for specifics to one here eg laptop, special software, books etc
There's about £3k paid out of our local one each year.

Can I ask which uni? It’s an extremely generous scholarship and I’ve never seen any that generous mentioned.
My dc is English in Scotland and gets £1000 a year RUK academic. Her school friend got another £3000 access bursary as he was from household under £25,000 income.
Queens Belfast are £3000 yr 1 scholarship for most GB applicants.
