University of Bristol accommodation and experience

DD had an offer from Bristol and I think she is going to accept it. What is the situation with the accommodation? The sooner she accepts the sooner can she choose? And what is the best halls to be in? We have not seen the accommodation as she had a private tour regarding her course as we couldn’t go to Open day.

I heard there are lots of drugs there. What is your child experience?

She had her eyes on IC, haven’t heard from them and after seeing Bristol she seems very keen on it and not sure about IC anymore,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think DD was 6 sharing. Most people with out a schedule. And, do you know what, in private flats and houses in y 2/3 there’s never ensuite! Students can actually learn to share!

Wrong thread, I know, but a vote for Birmingham, then - quite a few of the private lets in the main student area there have been refurbished with en-suite shower rooms.

@MarchingFrogs And that always puts up the price. My DDs never worried about sharing but i guess thats why the old catered halls at Bristol have ex boarders in them. They are not prudish and like eating together.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner Yes many of those at Stoke Bishop are ex boarders so are comfortable with the catered halls/ shared bathroom.

My DD has just finished her first year in Wills catered halls. She had her own bathroom which was tiny and a very uncomfortable bed but that was what she requested. She had a fantastic year, very social and made lots of friends. Coming from Scotland she didn’t know a single person.
I have a DS at Edinburgh and accommodation costs are similar.

There’s also plenty of non boarding school style accommodation at Bristol. Ds spent his first year in one of the smaller Clifton halls (Richmond terrace). A bit grotty (and he was in basement with view of bins) but fine. Great location- very near uni, triangle etc and they were even filming Dr Who on adjacent street to him - added bonus!

DD was in city centre at Orchard. V v sociable (even in Covid). Easy walk to Uni, shops and bars on the harbour. Wherever they end up they'll make friends and have fun.

PS no one cares where or what type of school you went to. It really doesn't matter !

@Lampzade And the less than modern rooms. However costs are more reasonable but you don’t have the bars nearby. Depends what you want but SB has catered rooms at less than swish self catered so value for money might matter. There’s very few halls that are catered! So non catered has a huge choice and more locations.
