Student life at Warwick

Is it as rubbish as one might imagine?
Living in Leamington doesn't sound like much fun for a student, and the bus service sounds problematic. What are people's DC's experiences like?

I have taught a range of students (state comp) who have gone to Warwick - as did DS's best friend (he's very studious, not a partygoer at all and lived on campus for 3 years). They have all spoken very highly of the uni and their experiences. I do think students who go to Warwick tend to pick it for the reputation, the quality of the uni, its reputation in specific courses - rather than lifestyle. They have all been 'heads screwed on' types. But I also hear the campus itself is very lively.

My DS is in the first year and loving it. Has found a house in Leamington for 2nd year.

He 100% chose it for reputation and quality of the course. He's doing maths. They're only there for about 35 weeks of the year. He's very involved in a couple of societies and seems to have a very active social life.

And it's relatively cheap. 1st year halls £5k, 2nd year will be around £6k.

is there any parking at the campus? Is it feasible to have a car for years 2&3?

Yes there is. I don't know how feasible it is as I don't know how many students drive but there are plenty of car parks.

I went to Warwick many years ago and I will say that as a Londoner who was very into clubbing I was worried at first. However there were a lot of coach trips to Birmingham and I pretty much went on one of those every week from memory. Don't even know if students go to clubs now.

I absolutely loved my time there and wouldn't change it for anything. I'm mid 40s now and still friends with my first year halls friends. You do build very close relationships at a campus university. It was wonderful.

Leamington is a fab student town to live in with lots of pubs etc. I was lucky enough to have a car but did use the bus a lot for nights out etc.

To the PP who said Warwick was ugly and uninspiring - yes it's a modern university but frankly I found my lectures and some of the teaching so inspiring it has influenced my whole life.

Also, Warwick Arts Centre right on campus. It's such a privilege. I went to a film premier there and got to interview the (famous) actor for the student paper. I watched tons of films, theatre and concerts there and my first opera. So much culture. I meet up with my Warwick friends now for the theatre a few times a year.

That said, my DC who are teens have already said that campus life is not for them and they want to go to city universities. Also, I went back for an event last year and it did seem that the union looked pretty boring on a weekend, but obviously a current student could confirm what actually goes on.

It’s about £8 per day to park on campus so you can share the cost with a couple of flatmates.

My DC found the teaching there to be fantastic. It definitely seems to be quite a studious place, their friends all seemed to be taking their studies very seriously, but also had fun. It’s also pretty affordable too.

One dc at Warwick. It’s great academically and socially is what you make it - there’s no shortage of different societies and opportunities.
Plenty of choice of accommodation and quite a few students choose to stay near campus 2nd/3rd year, but still go on nights out in Leamington via bus/uber.
It is not pretty building wise, but the green areas on campus compensate.
My dc chose on the basis of the quality of the course and great open day department welcome and lectures. They have been happy.

The campus at Warwick is now very green and lovely, not the barren desert it once was. The trees have matured since the 80’s/90’s.

I thought you were going to say since the 1960s

This is what it was like in 1970. A short film complete with Beatles soundtrack.

'On campus', 1970
This frank portrayal of Warwick University students at work and play begins with the caption: “The sixth former entering university often has difficulty in adjusting to a new academic and social life – students at the University of Warwick who have experienced the same problem decided to make this film to help . . . “
