Who understands Open University (especially the points stuff)

Somewhere (I can't find it) I have a piece of paper which tells me I have X amount of level(year?) 1 points

And I think I can do yr 2 then yr3 stuff & I have to get 360 points (maybe?)

Does that make any sense or can you explain it better?

If you are wanting to get a degree, you need to do at least X points at level 2 and at least Y points at level 3. Unfortunately I can't remember for sure if X and Y are both 120.

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 20:59

'Tis complicated isn't it

Is it a degree you're planning to do? - I was just looking at their website to see if there was a page which made it all clear, but it just seemed to be more complicated! I did a level 1 course and was thinking about continuing, but haven't got round to it yet.

I remember it depends on what degree you want to do as well - for some you have to do specific courses, but others will work with any combination. Nice and flexible maybe, but definitely complicated!

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:06

Actually I may be lying I just found the form to send of to find out if my previous study counts - so either I emailed it or I never sent it

I'm not sure

I feel a bit daft - I am going to have to ring up & ask if I sent it to them

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 11/06/2008 21:09

Oops! I guess you'll have to phone them to find out whether you sent it in or not... then they can probably give you advice on what you need to do to get the qualification you want.

orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:09

Degree is 360 point, most level 1, 2 and 3 are 60 points, although the odd few are 30 points. Each degree has a set of courses you must do for that degree the remaining points you can make up with whatever course you like. You should have in a letter they have sent you your username and password to log on to website. If you log on it will tell you what course you have done and how many points you have, you can then link that course to the degree you what to do and it will then tell you what you have to do to complete the degree. I hope that makes sense, very tired from too much studying. What degree are doing?

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:12

I think that I had 120 points (I passed the first year of a degree about 20 yrs ago) & I I think that I need to do 2 units at level 2 & 2 at level 3

Would that make any sense at all?

OP posts:
sandy4 · 11/06/2008 21:15

if it's any help, i did one level one course, 3 level 2 courses and 2 level 3 courses. each were 60 points. that was for an OU hounours degree.

i should be getting on with W100 essay??!! as i write (MN is a good avoidance tactic)

That would make sense.

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:17

So do I just pick the first course & dive in?

Or do I have to match them together?

OP posts:
jamila169 · 11/06/2008 21:19

you can do an open degree - then you get the award that matches your choice of courses Ba/BSC

orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:19

What degree are you wanting to do?

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:22

I want to mix childcare & management (I think....maybe)

I can either
1)do a childcare degree & struggle with the Business stuff
2)do a Business degree & struggle with the childcare stuff
3)do a Business degree & do a 6 month EYPS
4)do a bit of each
5)mentally implode with the stress of it all

that sounds so much cooler than mine, best of luck with it all

orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:31

Sounds like an open degree might be best. Im doing childhood studies

They want nursery managers to have degrees

I have been trying to decide what to do

It is very hard - how much psychology is there in that?

OP posts:
orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:42

Are you asking about the childhood? (told you Im very tired). Its really interesting, some pschology in it but I like that. I am finding it more difficult time wise. I am just on 2nd level 2 course so 3 years to go . I thimk one of the level 3 courses you can choice is management

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:44

Yes I was - I don't like the psychology & theorists & stuff

I am just so confused

k303 is in managing

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:49

That looks good

I am looking at

this
this one
& this
& this]

But I need to sort it all out

OP posts:
orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:51

The one that is mainly psychology is ed209. U212 isnt really but touches on it a bit but mainly focuses on how childhood has changed through time and is very different globally. The ou does have open days where you can go along and talk through your choices, you could ring and see when the next one is near you. Most courses dont start till jan/feb so you have a bit of time

orangehead · 11/06/2008 21:55

But they will be able to advice you best at an open day

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 21:56

fancy this too
