So long as it's voluntary then I don't see why anyone would object.

That said I would think that the US model where not only do they pay you for the time in the military but they also pay for your university tuition fees would be a lot more popular and attractive.

The British Military do this already for some degrees. They will pay your full course fees whilst at university after initial officer training. You do need top grades for this. 144 UCAS points.

I guess what I meant was to amend / widen the existing scheme.

The Royal Navy scheme is wickedly tough to get on to, needing 144 UCAS points, a tough Admiralty interview and then a 6 to 7 year commitment afterwards plus it's only eligible for engineering and computing courses.

Whereas the US system is two years service upfront then a choice of any degree afterwards and not commitment after that.

The upfront service bit for both the UK and US systems is a good and at least makes for students that get out of bed on time and keep tidy rooms 😀.

So maybe a system somewhere between the two.
