My DS is in third year of Meng. He loves it! Loves the projects and the range of Engineering modules.

Superb.

Beebeebes · 25/11/2025 19:27

DC has to choose between Kings College and Queens Mary for her 5th choice.

Would you say Kings College is better?

No offence to anyone at QMU but KCL is in a different class.

PolskiFiat · 25/11/2025 19:36

Out of interest, do many students live at home? My DD is thinking of kings and to
commute in

What are the job prospects like for a Meng degree? (Asking as I have a young dc who is interested).

cinnamontreat767 · 30/11/2025 02:10

My DD was at UCL, she had a close friend who went to Kings, and we chatted about it when she was over for dinner. She said it's great, but depending on what you study and where your accomodation is it's not amazing. She was telling us about the showers in her dorms, and they were like the ones on a cruise ship. It was also very far away and she had to commute for ages to get to her lectures.
Research accomodation!

Beebeebes · 30/11/2025 07:59

Thank you all. It is good to hear it has a good reputation and engineering is good. We live in London, commuting will be very straightforward.

I would research how many grads go into the City after this degree at Kings. How many actually become engineers? KCL has hardly any engineering degrees and is very limited in what it offers. It’s never been a great engineering uni. The CUG rates it 8 and QMUL 11 for GE. So it’s not miles better at all. It’s a high class university that’s decided to do a few Engineering degrees so offers electronic and general. No civils, mechanical, aerospace, etc etc. London doesn’t have the best engineering degrees in terms of breadth. It won’t make much difference to a career but it’s very difficult to say it’s amazing at Engineering.

Ohh thank you; not sure exactly what those rates meam. But it does sound like neither those unis are good for engineering

Would you say Liverpool University is better for Engineering? Than Queens Mary and Kings?

OP posts:
AelinAG · 30/11/2025 12:06

It doesn’t rank as highly, but has an entire school of engineering offering the full breadth so more choice and opportunity for projects. Closer to a lot of industry as well so the students benefit in that sense

@Beebeebes Yes for engineering. No for city finance jobs if that’s what he wants. Liverpool is a traditional Engineering uni with many courses.

Beebeebes · 30/11/2025 17:00

Thanks. I have suggested DC to consider their options carefully snd put 5 choices they are happy with. There is an engineering in Sheffield with a foundation year which may be one of the choices. Durham also has a general engineering without physics so there are other options. They have 3 they are happy with so just need 2 more

chocorabbit · 30/11/2025 18:11

OP, if you can't afford it don't feel pressured to move out of London. I have PMed you.

OhDear111 · 30/11/2025 19:09

@chocorabbit This really depends on the course dc can actually get onto though. Without physics, it’s limited. If living at home is vital, then there’s little point in the discussion. Just list the London universities! Many dc who really want to be engineers go where there’s a lot on offer and not just a handful of courses or Imperial that’s very competitive.
