Summer adventures?

My DD is thinking about the summer uni vacation and is looking for adventure. Does anyone have any recommendations? Either earning money or voluntary (basically not costing her much for a summer of adventure). She has looked at camp America but isn’t keen - not enough adventure for the lack of real pay.

Well I was going to recommend Camp America mine has signed up again for 2026. She earned enough to travel for 2.5 weeks after, they went to a few places inc Hawaii. This year when she goes back Camp are sending her to Costa Rica with her camp kids for 2 weeks as part of camp. There’s camp Canada too if USA doesn’t appeal.

Realistically she’s not going to get paid for “adventure”. And most overseas volunteer schemes for young adults want some money upfront from them you to cover room and board at least.

Best bet is to earn some money in a non adventure job, abroad if she can find it or here if she can’t, then use the earnings to travel - pick cheap countries like Indonesia or India.

Is she in girlguiding? The world centres take volunteers eg Sangam in India.
Work here, save and then travel seems a good option - Vietnam/Thailand/Cambodia seems popular with my DD’s friend group as it’s cheaper.
Mine went on weekly trips with the kids and with friends from Camp America too, it wasn’t a case of being stuck in a forest for 8 weeks. Obviously choose a camp carefully.

Earning money first is another option she is considering as that allows for more adventurous activities. The ‘adventure’ could include overseas work of a more mundane variety in an interesting location which is why I included it.

This is exactly what DS has done for the last 2 Summers. Earned a bit then gone on an extended trip abroad.

Probably easiest to earn money for the summer then book on a group tour or group volunteering experience in a place she wants to go.

When you say she wants adventure does she define what that means? High adrenaline activities? Visiting a certain type of environment? Or generally having fun and meeting new people in a place that is not the UK?

Adventure meaning generally meeting new people outwith the UK. Not especially high adrenaline activities (I wouldn’t want to encourage those) nor high risk countries (I would say ‘no’ to those). She was very tempted by Camp America but I think she decided in the end that weeks of children for little pay wasn’t her thing. She did a weeklong camp as a volunteer last summer in the UK and came back from that saying a week with children was enough, so I was surprised when she initially revisited camp America.
