My dd was in hospital for almost the whole of year one of A levels, she did keep up with her studies but has gaps. She is likely to get excellent grades probably predicted As.
However she has heart on LSE and they want higher than that.
She is talking about one option of redoing the second year of a levels to up her grades.
Do universities see this as a negative?
I don’t want her to do that and then be told they are put off by it.
I have suggested other unis but she seems set on the ‘best ones’

Any advice?

I should add that me and my husband did not attend university and don’t really know how it all works!

Some do, some don’t. It might be better if her application mentioned her missing teaching but still coping well.

I would try the LSE admissions team and also look would she qualify for a contextual offer https://www.lse.ac.uk/Study-at-LSE/Undergraduate/Prospective-Students/How-to-Apply/Entry-Requirements and / or one of the contextual programmes. For Economics it was a very low offer rate around 7%, other subjects may have higher offer rates but you would need to check subject by subject. I would ask them about repeating a year - may not be worth it.

Sorry she has been so ill. I would probably as normal but have a back up plan of another year so can try again. Its good to aim high and know what you want but she needs back up plans. Visit the LSE if you haven't already and some others.

If there are entry tests (is for economics now) then doing very well in those will be very important.

The Sutton Trust runs schemes for when parents have not been to university - it seems to say need to be in y12 but don't know if they might make an exception as she was in hospital. Maybe give them a call. Their aim is to help people like your DD.

If she is in Y13 now and plans to sit her exams at the end of the year, you need a conversation with school about whether they will let her do another year of studies. If she’s achieved level 3 quals, they don’t have to.

Even with 3 Astars, LSE is hugely competitive institution so there is merit in working with her to look at other options - particularly if she will finish in two years with great grades anyway
