2nd year will be even more expensive than 1st year then

I thought you probably only had to pay for 40 weeks

So how do you bet uni owned accommodation in second year then ?

Sometimes you can get it if you have some kind of "campus" role e.g. on the JCR committee

It didn't used to be, but presumably it's like rental prices - once one landlord gets away with charging more, the "market norm" shifts. York is crazy expensive for the provinces.

AceKitten · 13/11/2025 16:19

Yes it's around 195 per week for the full year atm

Depends on the university. Some of them it's offered for all three years as standard. Mostly the old ones with lots of money.

AceKitten · 13/11/2025 16:20

How much is london or bristol then .?

Private halls are 40 ish weeks in York. But cost more than uni halls. Dc had one.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 13/11/2025 16:21

When I was at uni we paid a retainer for the summer which was less than the rent

Mine had 3 years (out of 4 year degree) in uni accommodation as did a resident assistant job (25% rent in lieu of work). Did not do this in final year as was a bit scunnered living with freshers. Did save me lots of money.

Cakeandusername · 13/11/2025 16:30

Some unis will also allow students to stay in uni halls for yr2 and yr3 if they have a disability.
I’ve not heard of retainer/half rent anywhere now, you need to be prepared to pay 52 weeks in private rental. Private halls are often 51 weeks.
My dc’s housemate opted to use private halls yr1 (place in clearing ) on a 51 week lease and then moved to private rental yr2 so summer between yr1 and yr2 she was paying yr1 halls and yr 2 private rent over £400 a week!

@AceKitten Bristol anecdotally (friends' dc there) is aboit £10k for the year London privs more.

Halls for second year depends on uni. Lancaster encourages it, as does Lboro and Leicester offered my Dd halls in her final year. But some unis have less accommodation so prioritise first years.

Don't know about Bristol. Imperial halls start at around £170 a week but you get a chunk of money towards it if you earn less than £70k so overall it's about £2.5k a year.

That's amazing from Imperial! I wonder why more ppl don't shout about that. Ofc it's very competitive to get in, but still an excellent offer.

Around the country now there are a lot of private student housing companies are there any near their uni which you do not pay for when home for the summer

Iloveeverycat · 13/11/2025 17:06

You could check if these don't full year payments.

clamshell24 · 13/11/2025 17:16

Yes and everywhere else

GlasgowGal2014 · 13/11/2025 17:24

Is this not fairly standard? I went to university in a Scottish city and graduated more than twenty years ago, but unless you could get into the university halls of residence you had to arrange a private let and the contract was year round. We got round it one year by handing our notice in the spring and then looking for somewhere else to start in August for the following year. However, from the end of second year onwards I didn't go home for the summer - I stayed in the city, worked and paid my rent that way.

I also had friends who studied in a town that had a teacher training college and they were able to get a lease on a house for three years without having to pay over the summer (they did have to move out), but demand for private rentals was a lot less down there. I remember even then being really surprised that it was an option!

You'd need to enquire with the university. It used to be available for mature students, foreign students and those with specific needs. But it's been a long time since I was there and I don't know the current rules and regs.

Tulipvase · 13/11/2025 18:15

My daughter is in Exeter and has a 48 week contract.

It’ll vary from uni to uni. Dd couldn’t get uni postgraduate accommodation even though she’s disabled as hey said they saved it all for overseas students.

another uni near me has more than enough accommodation and undergrads often stay In uni owner Halls for all three years. Space for postgrads too.

TAmum123 · 13/11/2025 18:28

DS has just signed a contract for next year for 48 weeks - 1/9 to 31/7. He is at UEA.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 13/11/2025 19:26

Dc Current contract in private halls is Sept to June.
year after its July to June but cheaper than private.

I know! UCL and Kings have similar schemes. Of course these are places that don't have problems balancing the books plus they can offer 39 week contracts because they rent out rooms to tourists in summer but at least they're passing the benefit on to those students who need it. Cheaper to be in London than in York!

sevilleseville · 13/11/2025 20:28

Only cheaper in London if the DCs qualify for help. Several friends’s DCs are paying eye watering sums for Halls in London.

Private student halls in York are available for a shorter number of weeks, but for a higher price per week. It doesn't work out any cheaper.
