Should I do a degree? If I do a degree which degree should I do & where/how?

I did an NVQ3 in Early Years childcare which I didn't really enjoy.

I did a level 3 certificate in First Line Management which I loved but found very hard

So do I do an Early Years Degree? or some sort of management degree?

If I do OU I already have 60 (or maybe 120?) points which means I can do it in only 4 yrs PT

Or I can do an early years foundation degree in 3yrs and top it up to a BA with another 3 (I think)

Or what?

actually just wanted to say congratulations on all your achievements - smashing!

no knowledge of how OU works, someone else contribute hopefully

southeastastra · 05/06/2008 21:51

early years would probably be more relevant to your work wouldn't it. the course would bring management into it anyway wouldn't it

KatyMac · 05/06/2008 21:53

Well I'm not sure

I quite fancy accounts

I mean, as a business owner I can either buy in Early Years expertise or management expertise, so it isn't straight forward

management skills will come naturally though if you're passionate about the business

KatyMac · 05/06/2008 21:58

Sorry I meant to say thanks to Scottishmummy

I guess I'm just not really interested in the EY stuff I guess

Do what you love.
Management might be tricky, but if you loved it, you will enjoy the course more, and prob enjoy the job you get at the end more.

Seems to me like management has more scope as well.

KatyMac · 05/06/2008 22:05

That's what I thought

The job I have is the job I will do

I am a childcare manager (my own business) & I am in the process of expanding

It's complicated

I think I would enjoy management and/or accounts more

But would Early years be more useful

I think I could talk myself in circles over this tbh

Any other thought on my conundrum?

I would do business, as you can pick up any extra nvq's you may need for childcare stuff.

I would contact a few Universities in your area, and see if any of your OU work is transferable, and how flexible their programs are.

I would do as much research as you can at different local universities, and check out their courses. I bet there will be a course that SCREAMS "pick me pick me!!!"

Can you do distance learning? Be realistic on how much time you will devote to it if you have do it on your own.

KatyMac · 06/06/2008 23:12

I guess

Distance learning does worry me

The ILM course was great college once a month - NVQ was every week & very hard work

Once a month worked well for me

I think I'm going to do a part-time degree in Business then follow up with a EYPS course

I think that will work for me

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/06/2008 17:06

Or maybe not

I am so confused

OP posts:
purpleduck · 11/06/2008 17:21

LOL!
Are you sure you want to do EITHER of them!!

JudgeNutmeg · 11/06/2008 17:24

I've just finished the first year of the Early Years Foundation Degree katymac. It's ace.

JudgeNutmeg · 11/06/2008 17:26

I also have a National Diploma in business studies and that's been very useful....not sure a business degree rather than a diploma would be of any more help to you in your field really. Depends why you want to study really.

JudgeNutmeg · 11/06/2008 17:27

Also, Early Years degree is fully funded.

KatyMac · 11/06/2008 20:32

I know about the funding

But I find child psychology soul-destroying.....surely if you treat each child as an individual then schema and all that such is useless

PurpleDuck - i get somewhere then read stuff & then hate it

Still - wittering on making no decisions

I would go for management if that is what you really enjoy. I started a degree years ago whihc I hated and could not keep the ongoing motivation needed to see it through. I am now half way through a science degree with the OU and loving it. sure its tough with 2 young kids but the acheivement mean envn more to me when I know how hard I worked to get this far.

juneybean · 17/06/2008 20:09

I thought the foundation degree only took 2 years (based on two nights per week) then one year to top up to a BA.

However you could create your own Open Degree with the OU factoring in both EY and Management subjects

KatyMac · 19/06/2008 20:58

Juneybean that would be much longer P/T tho' wouldn't it?

I am thinking about management plus a 6 month EYPS at the end
